IMHO, with an authentic mech mod ($150+), there's a high expectation of quality and attention to detail. Limited production of these things also inflates the price via supply and demand. Many will be hoarded by collectors as pieces of art, and may never even be used for their intended purpose.
Not getting into the ethics of it, my first mech mod was from FT, a $25 SS Nemesis clone. While I could afford an authentic mod, I went the clone route to start off, because I'm still fairly new at this and I didn't want to ruin an expensive piece of art with all of the fiddling that I knew I'd be doing with it. The one I got had very good reviews, and after taking some 400 grit emory cloth to the switch mechanism, and trying a few different lubes, I'm pretty happy with the way it works.
Would a $180 mod would require less fiddling in the first place? Maybe, but I know myself enough to know that I'd still mess with it.
You didn't say exactly what you ordered. Some of the FT clones are better than others, and the reviews and discussions are a good indicator.
A typical new driver doesn't hit the road in a Bentley, right?
