Hi all-- I am a new vaper (began the first week of April and haven't smoked since--woo hoo!) and have recently gotten a nautilus Mini. Today I have noticed that when I put fresh e-liquid in, it is turning brown (ewww) after a while. What the heck is going on?! It's only a week old, so I don't know what's going on. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Hi Kelley, and welcome to ECF!

Great that you're making the switch, your body will appreciate it :)

All toppers - the Nautilus, in your case - contain a coil / heating element, wick, and, of course, your juice. The coil/wick part, aka the head, is a replaceable part with a limited life. It will gunk up over time, and that amount of time will vary depending on flavor and a few other things. After a week, it may just be time to swap in a new one. (Some heads can be rebuilt, some toppers are designed to only be be rebuilt. But probably best to wait on that until you're more comfortable with what you have - and discover more about what you like :) )

The discoloration is likely from some of the gunk becoming mixed in with the fresh juice. Unless it actually tastes bad / different it's not a problem, and is pretty normal.

Sitting down, facing forward.
Another source of liquid darkening, especially toward the end of the tank, is liquid wicking backward from the wick back into the tank. All you are really seeing is a concentration of the flavors and some darkening from the "toasted" liquid seeping back into the tank. Flavor may change, become more intense, or even taste burned but it is not particularly dangerous.

I use rebuildable tanks and if the wick density isn't high enough in the wick channels the liquid gets fairly dark for the last 1/3 to 1/4 of a tank of 4ml.

The clearer liquids, general, don't contain the same amount of dark material as lighter ones, like Coke is darker than 7up. They, too, will darken but not as noticeably as a liquid that is just a little darker to begin with.

Liquid will darken with age, but to get the darkening like we see in a tank toward the end it would have to be centuries old.

That gives me comfort... I didn't want to waste the juice that was already in the tank! Thank you for the info, David!! ;)

There is so much to learn! But thankfully members like you are kind enough to help the newbies like me along the way. Much appreciated, Awsum!

I always thought the liquid just continues to get darker as it "ages". Especially so when it's out in a tank, getting exposed to more light. My liquids get darker in the bottle as it sits in a drawer.

My clearer liquids don't seem to turn dark in tanks.
I was wondering that, but I noticed it happening after only about thirty minutes of refilling with new e-liquid. Livin' and learnin' is cool, tho. Thanks for your input, smacuser!

Yeah, it's probably backwash from your coil; nothing to worry about unless it tastes bad. Just dump the few drops of dark liquid before refilling your clearomizer if it offends you.

    I mostly use cartotanks.
