How did this come about?
I've met Rocket Scientist Matt a couple of times and he is a lovely chap - but last time we met (at the last Manchester vape Meet) he turned up with examples of the various sizes of his forthcoming Hybrid Dripper. A combination of chatting, beer and the beauty of the mods he had brought along resulted in me pressing the button on the RSM website as soon as they became available for sale... Beer costs a lot of money
What did I get?
This is what was in the box I got:
The mod and a spares bag containing o-rings, spare screws and a hex key. (I also got two of matt's excellent drip tips, but they do not come with the mod as ordered)
The Hybrid Dripper
Well here it is:
It is very shiny, so I must apologise at this point for all finger marks and smears shown it the photos. It has the "engineered" feel and quality that I love, with very nice threads.
Here is the Dripper:
The pole can be screwed in and out to provide a rattle free contact with the battery.
The insides are also very finely constructed:
The centre post uses a thumb nut and the other posts are hex bolts (but I'm sure they could be replaced with other types of bolt).
The Dripper has a very small conical chamber, as can be seen from the cap:
The button is also interesting:
It is apparently a "bronze ultra low pressure double piston switch for feather light / smooth operation (0.5mm throw)"! What that means in practice is it has no "tilt" to its operation and therefore can be pressed anywhere on its surface without misfire - you don't have to press it much either
The Dripper end of the tube has a lip inside it:
This means the Dripper is always (once the pole has been set right) screwed down the same amount and avoids over-tightening. It also means - unusually for me - that the battery is inserted via the button end (as the button is a single unit it is not a problem).
In use
Here is my first build: five wraps of 0.34mm Tiger Wire giving around 0.8ohms:
Having wicked this with cotton, it seemed to work fine:
(I'm not very good at these action shots - be assured there was much sound and fury and copious vapour). This is now performing splendidly as I type this review.
Oops forgot to add - I'm using an appropriate battery of course: an SBL700 IMR from Torchy rated for 10A and well capable of dealing with builds down to 0.5ohms. The device is staying nice and cool to the touch...
As an aside, here are two RSM Drip Tips:
Specifically: "Stainless Steel Nano Tip - 8mm Ultra Wide Bore" and "Pyrex Shorty Tip - Stainless Steel Collar"...
Here is the Pyrex one on the Dripper:
Overall, I think you can tell I'm very pleased with my purchase. What I haven't said, and should have, is that this is the smallest and neatest 18350 set up I've ever handled... Well done Matt
An afterthought: I should also say that this is NOT intended or designed for Cloud Chasing or other extreme stuff - there is room for two coils but big fat monster coils just wouldn't fit. It is a vaping device and a good one. (Having said that, you can can ask for a bigger air hole than than standard 1.1mm one when you order)
Matt just pointed something else out: "If you look at the deck you will see that the negative screws are offset - this leaves a 'small side' and a 'large side'. When dual coiling, there is a lot more room when you use the 'large side' of the deck." I had noticed this, but only after I'd coiled and wicked it on the "small side"
