Kate Hanni: Should The Transportation Department Ban Electronic Cigarettes On Planes

I'm a long time lurker on this forum and haven't posted here so I had to post in the new members vice travel. mods please feel free to move as appropriate to travel or news. I am a former smoker who gave it up and have been vaping since June of this year. I am also a member of another entity who is familiar with the rulemaking process. I apologize for being vague. The reason I am posting is that when a NPRM is published, public comment is solicited. You can view the proposed rule and submit comments (which must be reviewed and addressed prior to a rule being finalized). The docket can be found at regulations.gov. Here is the direct link. Regulations.gov You may submit anonymously if you choose. I am personally opposed to this rule, but you may comment either way how you feel. I hope you feel this is relevant. Thank you for reading.

Heyas,

Personally, although there doesn't seem to be any long term testing data to suggest whether second hand vapor is harmful, I don't believe that it is. Except of course, in those rare instances where someone has an extreme allergy to something in the vape. But the same could be said for strawberries. Or eggs. Or peanuts. (Ban peanuts on planes? :p )

That being said, I don't think it would be unreasonable to ban vaping on planes, since the atmosphere in a plane is a closed system (whatever the correct term for that would be). If all people were reasonable, which they aren't.

What I mean by that is, I'd protest bans on vaping anywhere just because, every law or regulation that gets passed, will just become fuel and fodder for the NicoNazis to place further, and progressively unreasonable, restrictions on vaping, an activity that I personallty believe to be relatively harmless.

Welcome to ECF Tooquickk. I think vaping on airlines is already banned and I don't object to that partly because I don't fly but mostly because of the tight quarters. Somebody is going to start trouble when they see someone vaping and the last place I would want trouble is on an airplane. But, I don't see any reason why we couldn't vape in the restroom. Nobody would be bother by that.

I guess it would be beneficial for all of us who vape (the eager beavers and the old bears alike) to simply not do it on planes. It sort of sends out the wrong message - in their eyes we're still smoking, but we are arrogant or cheeky enough to bend the rules as to satisfy our 'perverse urges' almost anywhere, due to some new fangled invention. The public eye is very ignorant, and I doubt we would be looked upon favorably.

As for second hand vapor, I have been told (by a few colleagues) that it is slightly irritating to them, and that the smell is quite strong, although I hardly notice it at all anymore. Must inquire further.
