Hi

Haven't really been keeping up for a while, as I'm really happy with my Protank 2 + ProVari v2.5 setup. But now, I'm getting my filthy paws on a P3, and therefor I decided to get an Aerotank Mega as well. Yes, that ancient thing ;)

Anywho, I'm trying to figure out, whether I can keep on truckin' with my Protank 2 single coil heads (rebuilt with microcoil and cotton), either as is, or with some modification?
There's obviously a gap if I just fit it as is, so I guess that would leak at some point, right?
If I fit an additional silicone cup on top of the original one, it looks like it seals up nicely, both when facing the same way, and when upside down, compared to the original cup.

What are your experiences with this? Does it work?

I'm not really interested in using the stock heads. I know I can use the old PT3 dual coil heads, which can be rebuilt, but since I have a bucket of PT2 heads already, I want to use them if possible, of course :)

Thanks in advance for your replies and suggestions.

I would like to have a definitive answer to this as well, but I've gotten conflicting information all over the place.

In my thread about the 3 versions of the aerotank bases I mention that I stick with the Protank II and the aerotank bases so I can use single coils. Two or three people chimed in and said they are using single rebuilt coils, without a second rubber cup and are experiencing no leakage in their Aerotanks.

I've read previously about needing the second inverted rubber cup to seal the gap between the two. I'm actually about to buy an Aerotank myself to try, but don't want to waste the money if it's not going to work. I've never built a dual coil before and don't want to go through the hassle of learning right now.

I use single coil heads in my Aerotank with no problems.

I have seen many ways to use the silicone 'caps' that come on the old and middle style coils.

But if you stack two of them on a single coil head in one of two configurations, you can use them and throw those dual coil nightmares away.

1 Stack both 'caps' facing down. Compensates for the lack of height.

2. More recently I discovered flipping the bottom cap up and forcing the top one (facing down) inside it. It's a bit complicated but it totally works.

I hope this helps, it works like a charm on my Aerotank and has never failed once.

Good luck!

Edit: Posting crushed my diagrams.

Leaving the caps out, or leaving only one on, there is no seal using single coil heads. They are not tall enough, this SHOULD if not ALWAYS WILL lead to the center pipe filling with juice under the negative pressure created by sucking to inhale.

Now i recently saw RipTrippers and others say taking the cap off has no effect, I call BS. If you set the SC and DC attys next to eachother, there is a huge gap to let in juice.

Using either of the methods from above, I've never ever EVER had a leaking problem. ONLY slight gurgle when I don't use enough cotton and juice fills the atomizer. I put all of my dual coil heads away for another day, maybe some vertical coil builds, but I don't use them any more. Single coil heads with two caps win it for me.

Yeah, while I've been waiting for replies, I did some testing myself.

On the Mega, the extra cup upside down doesn't seal it too well, as the air tube is quite a bit smaller in diameter, compared to the cup.
But with an extra cup fitted in the same direction as the original one, it seems as if it's pretty much leak-free. I have seen a few droplets around the air flow hole though, but I can't tell if that was due to too little cotton, cup not seated properly or whatever.
I've messed around with the q-tip trick, for filling some of that huge headspace as well, so don't know if I might have messed up the vacuum or something there, causing those ever so small leaks.

Haven't had any issues with it for the last two tanks of liquid now :)
