Go to Walgreens, Rite Aid, or a store like that. U want ORGANIC cotton balls. It's because the cotton isn't bleached in some weird chemicals to make them REALLY white.

I have rebuilt a TON of heads and was great at it at first. No problems. No nasty taste, except the wick and wire breaking in, which I could deal with, but MAN, lately ALL I am getting is a HORRIBLE burnt taste. Don't know what the heck I did different from before, but the taste is unbearable. It tastes exactly like burnt rubber. I can't vape it AT ALL. I think it's the rubber insulator cuz there's some burn marks on it. I vaped the same factory head for a couple wks, took it apart to rebuild, no burnt marks. Rebuilt it, taste like ...., and there's burn marks. Ohms are 1.4-2.4, depending on the build. Used 28AWG, 30 AWG, 32 AWG, silica, Ekowool, cotton. What the heck am I doing wrong to get that burnt plastic taste? Anyone know how to stop burning the rubber grommet? I don't get how I can go from great to horrible. Usually u get better, over time, with builds. It's really frustrating me. Shoot me a PM if u want.

I can help with anything else EXCEPT that darn burnt taste, so plz ask about wrapping or whatever.....if u dare ;) Take care, everyone!

Take a look inside the hole the grommet fits in. You will likely see carbon build up. Maybe even some bumpy areas from heavy build up. This stops/hampers conductivity. Poor Ground contact. A small conical wire brush or sandpaper may clean it up. this should stop the Grommet scorching issues.:)

The rubber grommet is burnt that holds the leads in. What the heck am I doing?!? PLEASE help me!!! Lol. I'm tastin that burnt rubber. The last four builds I did have the same exact ... problem. I'm getting ...... about it cuz I keep burning that rubber.

Im not sure how my problem stopped but what i did was i dry burned it a bit then filled up the tank and just had to get through abt 15 to 20 hits without inhaling cuz it tasted like crap, but eventually the nasty taste went away. also i made sure my coils werent sitting to far down towards the rubber insulator and eventually the smell went away. I still see a few scorch marks but it hasnt caused any nasty taste yet. I've been working on my new aga t2 so i havent rebuilt another protank head so hopefully that helps you.

If I go thru those nasty hits and they don't go away, I will find u and I will kill u. HAHAHAHA!!!! A little Taken reference. Definitely not inhaling that crap! Lol. I'm going to try one more rebuild and then I'll try killing myself with the inhalation of burnt rubber. Ha. Thanks, man. I hope u saw that I was kidding around the whole time.....or was I?!

It might be overheating the rubber grommet in the head. Two things can cause that: if you get the coil too low in the head (i.e. too close to the grommet) or if the coil is too loose on the wick.

Overheated rubber tastes really bad (don't ask how I know that lol).

This is exactly my problem! All of my rubber grommets have burn spots on them. When you say that the coil is too low in the head, what do you mean? I always wrap mine with a paper clip in the hollow wick and after the wrap I rest the paper clip right in the coil head and feed the two legs through the open hole. Then I give them a good tug before putting the grommet and the pin in. Would this cause the coil to be too close to the grommet? I may also be wrapping too loosely. I also sometimes feel a tiny stub of the wire after cutting off the excess wire. Sometimes I can't get that cut close enough. Any suggestions?

Something that might help... You can buy replacement grommets at Lightening Vapes. They are listed as silicone, which may not burn as easily. I've been using these for a few weeks, and it seems that they do not get as scorched as the grommets that came with the heads, but I can't say that definitively. It's just an observation. At any rate, if you are going through grommets, it might be good to have some replacements. I've been very pleased with them and bought 3 packs so far. ;)

I bought some of these grommets too. They are exactly the same thing that is in the factory made coils. The thing is, I started rebuilding these atty's to save money. I change them frequently due to my super sensitive taste buds (lately). These are WAY over-priced. That's .62 cents per grommet! A new head is only a buck! Several weeks ago, I saw a link on the forum to e-bay that showed 100 of these grommets for $2 but of course now that I am looking for it I can't find it anywhere!!

I have a mix of aged heads from Kanger. The older ones with the white rubber insulator grommet develop a "taste" after a while no matter what. The silicone insulator ones seem to be better to me. I do not rebuild them but have done so, I just wash and dry burn. I remove the flavor wicks and replace with cotton and replace that every time I clean them. I know I get a lot of cycles from them but do not know how many. I probably have 30 heads, I change them after 5 tanks in the PT Minis and 3 tanks in the PTs. I have a clean bowl and a dirty bowl, once I get around 10 in the dirty bowl I do my cleaning ritual, dry burn, rinse, replace flavor wick and drop them in the clean bowl.

I have only thrown a few heads away. Once I started catching them before they were "too gunked" they started lasting.

I have a few PT3 heads in the bowl that I need to take apart and see what I can do to extend their life or rebuild.

This response makes no sense and gets people even more confused.

1) A saturated wick does not dry burn
2) Torching and dry burning are basically the SAME thing

Preparing for a rebuild:
Tape ends of new wicking and Boil in distilled water if desired
Before cutting a piece of Wick, pass wicking through Blue Flame several times to burn off impurities
Pass Kanthal wire trough Flame Blue flame slowly to reach orange glow - This cleans and makes wire more manageable
Using a straight pin as a guide/tool, wrap coil around wick. Do NOT over tighten coil of it will pinch wick and reduce absorption.
Make sure it is not Loose or hot burning metal will be your flavor.

Once coil/wick is built and ohms verified - Pulse fire coil several times to verify equal heat dispersion and final clean wick.

Building tip - WASH HANDS BEFORE STARTING to Remove any lotions or Greasy fried chicken flavoring, etc:D

This is pretty close to the method I use, except that I don't wash my hands first, I just LOVE me some Fried Chicken Vape!

I came across a FB coop buy of the protank insulators and the 2 other PT orings. I've only seen them once and lucky I grabbed a bunch before the coop filled up. These ones are grey and they work great to replace the ones that have burn marks. I have to look back but I think I paid 13 bucks for 100 and worth every cent.
One of the biggest mistakes people do with their atty heads is to soak them in alcohol cause it breaks down the rubber and they become crispy and fall apart faster, that goes with the orings too. I've been rebuilding protanks for about 6 months now and have a stash of about dozen insulators that are unusable due to just wearing out and having burn marks, not bad for 2 of us vaping in my houseold and constantly rebuilding PT heads since I get about 5 days before I replace my hemp fiber wicking, 3 days if its cotton and about 2 weeks before I replace the coil with a new build.
I also rebuild heads for some of my friends since one of my ekowool builds is oodles better than any stock head out there and they will pay to have a quality vape.
