Ok tried 7/8 wraps glow is nice still smells like crap! I compared the stock coils with mine and they look identical almost. is it possible that the rubber turns to crap after you scorch it once?

heres a pic of the wrap does anything look wrong with it?

The wrap looks really good. It may be the picture angle, but it looks as if the coil is still being pulled down a bit too far? I usually try to make my coil sit in a straight line across the channel. Again, it may be the way the picture is taken.

You mentioned RBA's - I have one on the way, a Smoktech RSST. It may not be the best, but it's inexpensive, gets decent reviews, the wick hole has an insulating grommet (less chance of shorts), and the tank is actually a cup that the wick sits in, so I can bottom the wick without shorting it to the metal body of the RBA.

Of course, I am a total noob, and this will be my first experiment with RBA's. I thought I'd try to start easy and cheap. We'll see how it goes.

thanks. so you're saying i should pull the coil up a bit higher? these stupid kanger and evod attys are a pain with that small rubber insulator. I just ordered an aga t2 i heard great reviews on those and they look a whole lot easier to build without getting some funky taste. I think its similar to the RSST but the RSST's are way easier to build so I've heard. but ya lets go team genesis! haha

The wrap looks good. Yes, it may be seated a bit too low.

But is the silica grey, or is it just the lighting in the picture?

Where did you get your wicking material?

It may be your picture viewed on my phone, but your wick appears to be black; like it has carbon residue all over it. If so, this would be a horrible vape! Your wick should look similar to this evod recoil

Kind of a bad pic but it should all be a nice shiny white

too keep it from setting too low. keep the paper clip or needle inside the wrap, so it sits on the bottom of the cut out. put the center pin on lightly. it will help hold it all in place. then insert the rubber on the bottom. then remove paper clip, and center pin fold the rest of wick for the flavor wick. re install center pin and go for it. works every time for me. oh and i wrap 5 turns on 2.5 mm silica with 32ga kanthol. I wrap it slightly tight to the paperclip/wick. end up 1.9-2.5 ohms

It was actually white and still had a funky smell so i tried a different method from someone on this forum and yes that is carbon residue. lol i was just desperate and tried everything. I will try leaving the pin in this time and see how that goes. I got a PM from a member here telling me that he also gets that nasty smell and he has to bare with it for about 15 vapes or so. It burns the rubber no matter what unless you get NR wires is what I was told. and also if you cant really see it but the dry burns removed the carbon at least where the coils are.

Absolutely not true.

I think i got it to work woot! so i was still using the wick from the pic above all carbonized and all i did was took a few dry hits to prime then started to fire it up (without inhaling) blew out a few clouds and eventually the taste stopped. it was flooding though so i had to add a few more strands of flavor wick and now its working pretty well. I've only taken a few hits so I guess if it goes bad I will update you guys!

Its a newer head, it has had about 5 fills through it. I use a grain acohol cut with distilled water soak then dry burn to clean. I stopped using silica mostly, and switched to cotton, so it was the only one I could find still coiled with silica. Its a regular build all resistance wire, I don't have a wire joiner and I hate getting the twists perfect for NR-R-NR builds.

This is my current setup that I prefer in my evod/ protank. Microcoil with cotton. The coils last forever with a good wash or soak and a dry burn with out the wick obviously, and it takes half a minute to rewick and go. I have not had any issues with melting/ burning insulators in the real or knock off coil heads.

The cotton sounds awesome but does it matter what kind of cotton? could you use those cotton balls from dental offices? your coils look real nice. I'm guessing the tank should never go lower than 1/3 incase it burns up right?

I use 100% Cotton Sterile Cotton Balls, you can get them at CVS, Walgreens etc. Others use 100% Rolled Sterile Cotton or Peaches and Cream yarn from wallyworld, or even butchers twine.

You can vape a tank dry with cotton wicks (well at least until all free-flowing liquid is gone).

You'll know when your wicks start drying out if you vape it that low.

Stupid question but arent all cotton balls sterile? and have you ever bought any silica wicks locally like at a Michaels or some art supply store. I'm thinking those wicks might be cheaper in bulk but im not sure if you can use them for vaping.

Go to Walgreens, Rite Aid, or a store like that. U want ORGANIC cotton balls. It's because the cotton isn't bleached in some weird chemicals to make them REALLY white.

I have rebuilt a TON of heads and was great at it at first. No problems. No nasty taste, except the wick and wire breaking in, which I could deal with, but MAN, lately ALL I am getting is a HORRIBLE burnt taste. Don't know what the heck I did different from before, but the taste is unbearable. It tastes exactly like burnt rubber. I can't vape it AT ALL. I think it's the rubber insulator cuz there's some burn marks on it. I vaped the same factory head for a couple wks, took it apart to rebuild, no burnt marks. Rebuilt it, taste like ...., and there's burn marks. Ohms are 1.4-2.4, depending on the build. Used 28AWG, 30 AWG, 32 AWG, silica, Ekowool, cotton. What the heck am I doing wrong to get that burnt plastic taste? Anyone know how to stop burning the rubber grommet? I don't get how I can go from great to horrible. Usually u get better, over time, with builds. It's really frustrating me. Shoot me a PM if u want.

I can help with anything else EXCEPT that darn burnt taste, so plz ask about wrapping or whatever.....if u dare ;) Take care, everyone!
