Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster.
I recently got a protank 2, and for some reason, the microcoil I built has a really muted flavor. I'm using 30 ga kanthal on a 1/16 bit @ 8 wraps measuring about 2.2 ohms. I'm also using silica wick because the juice I'm using tastes strange with cotton. I've also built it multiple times, with 30 and 32 gauge, but to no avail.

Yup, flavor is definitely muted compared to the stock head, and I do have a piece of wick on top out of necessity. It'll flood if I don't put at least 2-3 strands.

I will try a nano coil build tonight. I think I have some 28 ga lying around somewhere.

These protanks are really finicky though. It's quite frustrating.

Yea I ended up buying some backup heads for this juice. The cotton wick makes it taste like I'm just burning cotton. It's strange though because I'll change the juice out and the cotton is perfect. The juice is echelon by drakes vapes for anyone interested.
Thanks for all the responses, it just seems like it's the juice that doesn't work well with a microcoil.

Sounds to me like maybe too much cotton? When you say change juice, do you rewick? My newbie guess would be that when you change juice it gets a bigger amount of juice on the cotton

Muted flavor is caused by a wick that is too dry. You have too much silica in the coil and or up top; probably in the coil.

Burning cotton taste is because your using too much and making the cotton too dense. You want it to be airy like a cloud. Don't roll it tight, pull it apart and *lightly form it into a wick pulling till it's the size of your coil or overwick.

The problem come when I don't make the cotton thick, it leaks way too much. The same is the case with silica. Too little wick = flooding, and too much wick = muted flavor. It's strange though, I got pretty decent results using a normal coil setup similar to the protank stock head. I.e. 30 ga 4-5 wraps, with a wick on top. My guess is that with the micro coil build there isn't enough juice flow to get a good tasting vape, and the fact that it is so much smaller than a normal coil means that the wick is smaller, leading to flooding. At least it makes sense in my head. I may just be rambling.

Juice flow is based on how you wick it. Its a delicate process. I don't think the stock coils are that big. At any rate ther are so many different factors. You could also be running he coil at to high of a power level. Micros are a hotter coil watt for watt imo. What ohms are you at. I started building these coils in a old t3 a year ago, it can be done it just takes trial and error. It doesn't happen overnight unless you get lucky.

You know you have the correct amount of wick for your juice when you have bubbles rising into the tank every 2-4 vapes or so during normal usage. When you hit that you have the correct amout of wick in The slots. Then you also have how it sits in the coil, it can't be too tight or too loose.

Take it step by step.

I build micro coil 5 wraps 28 gauge on a 20 gauge needle for 0.9 ohms. Use peaches n cream cotton yarn as a wick, single strand.

I use mech mods and at least 50% vg juice, so this works for me. For the few high pg juices I have I do 9 wraps with the same wire/ID for a 1.6-1.7 ohm coil.

With a 20 gauge needle the peaches n cream cotton yarn is the perfect wicking material, no flavor wicks required.

With 30 guage and a 1/16 bit and 8/9 wraps I hit 1.8 ohms every time. Get a pair of pliers and pinch the coil and heat it with a torch. Seems like your not getting the coils close enough. Should see then lighting up from inside out on the coil when firing in a device.

Also cotton for wick, just through the middle and Happy Vape times.
