Protected or Unprotected?

So, I'll be looking to get a mech mod soon. I have designs on a sigelei mod. My question is - is it suggested to use protected or unprotected batteries in it? I read a bunch of stuff, but I didn't see anything that suggested either or - just, "don't buy *fire batteries or chargers". I'd probably want to go with 18500's, since I could add a kick to it... I'd ASSUME that I should use protected in a Mech Mod, but unprotected in something like a VAMO, since it has that stuff built in. Is that correct?

Thank you! I saw those fuses, and didn't think it through - the idea is that you can reuse them on unprotected batteries. Good call.
