Early this morning, before heading out to work, I heard on the TV someone ask a youngster who they favored in the Superbowl. The response was the Steelers. Until that moment, I didn't know the identities of either team participating in this glorified sporting event.

Am I the only person in this country who feels zero interest in team sports? It seems so weird to me that most people hold this competition to be so important. I'm like, meh, too bad all that time, money and energy can't be spent on something worthwhile.

Yeah, drew, I guess Post #1 sounded a little judgmental. Not something I want to be. And, I can't deny I'm obsessive about some things. Still, it seems weird to me just how wrapped up people get in this thing, and how small a minority we are.

I dunno, it's the scale of the thing. I guess if the whole country were obsessed with something which I feel is important I would be delighted. Or frightened!

Really, what brings a community together for a good reason than a successful sports team? People from all walks of life get behind their team, acting with a togetherness and inclusiveness that is sadly lacking in today's society. Sure there are more important issues and better things to spend your money on but it gives you a few hours where your daily troubles can be set aside for at least a little bit -- and it gives you a referece point for conversations that span generations or social classes.:)

I don't know that I can agree with the rest of your post, but I DO see your point here. When Superbowl I was kicking off on January 15, 1967, me and my buddy Andy were passing through his house. His father was glued to the TV and told us as we passed through that this was going to be an annual thing. He was really excited about it, I remember that. Andy and I just went outside to play. Let's see, on 1/15/1967 I was in the 7th grade ... hmmm. Nope, still no interest, LOL. However, I'm slightly obsessed with vaping, and with my uncommon car, and they both provide a vehicle to span generations and social classes ... so, I'm good to go without sports.

I enjoy going to a game, whether it's football, baseball, hockey... whatever. I just hate watching it on TV. So I don't do it.
The only sport I watch is hockey- and I prefer watching it on my TV. I never get good seats at the arena, and end up watching from the nosebleed seats- so the view is much better sitting in my living room with my feet up! Besides, the teams I love don't play near me (Detroit, Boston and Toronto). Football? eh- although I like to watch the superbowl commercials!

I wish I could get into football. It is great to see the camaraderie, the fun, and the excitement that people have about games. Tailgating and Superbowl parties look like so much fun. It is great to see families and friends getting together with none of the angst that you get with holiday dinners. I feel kind of left out because I just sit around thinking "What is the big deal? A game is a game is a game, and it's only a game. This is silly and much ado about nothing."

I think I was damaged as a kid. I grew up in Canton, Ohio and went to McKinley High school - which they built in the parking lot of the Football Hall of Fame. I was in band because I wanted to play music, but our role was more like that of geeky cheerleaders. The entire culture in Canton, and most all of NE Ohio, is wrapped up in sports. It seemed like nothing else mattered to anyone. As an overly rebellious teenager, I decided I was going to be against whatever the majority was for.

My hatred for football has waned to apathy over the years. So maybe there is hope for me yet. I feel like I am missing out on something. I see this sort of testosterone drenched warm fuzziness. I think it would be nice to experience. I just don't get it.<Sigh>

Be well,
~A
