I have seen how expensive they can be! Are they any cheap decent ones that are good for getting the hang of them?
i've always held the statement that the vivi nova is a nice intro into RBAs, but if you want to skip the nova (as i don't find it performs well enough most of the time anyways) then the COV gen-1 over at clouds of vapor is only 12 dollars, however, clouds of vapor also sells the same genesis i've been using, the AGA-T, for 30 dollars, and is solid stainless vs stainless plated brass on the COV gen-1....all you need other than the atomizer is some wick material and some wire.
if you are going with a genesis style atty, mesh wicks are the way to go, they sell mesh on COV website, but you can find a better deal on ebay for larger quantities, though it doesn't matter too much early on as the wicks are very durable and can last long periods of time, so it's probably better if you grabbed a few of the pre-cut sheets from them as well. you'll want the #400 mesh, as it's the best all-around mesh
next up is wire....for wire you want KANTHAL. some people will say nichrome works fine as well...i find the nichrome too brittle and that it gives a funky metallic taste...preferably you want a wire gauged somewhere between 28-32...when dealing with wire, the LOWER the wire guage, the LOWER the resistance you will get...32 guage is the most recommended as it has the most flexibility and is widely considered the easiest to work with for it's flexibility, however i've grown to like ultra low resistance stuff that i make with 28 gauge, as the wire is thicker and more durable...you can pick up both 28 and 32 gauge kanthal over at mountain oak vapors and try a few coils out that way to see which one works best for you.
the only thing you will need other than these things is a torch that produces a blue flame so that you can oxidize your wicks....a quick trip to lowes/home depot/harbor freight can solve this problem for you for less than 10 dollars...check the plumbers section for a butane soldering torch, preferably one that can stand itself up so you don't have to juggle so many things in your hands at once.
Edit: just keep in mind the Genesis attys are fairly substantial devices...here is a comparison to show you:
