I have never had any plastic taste from PTB filler. I think its ratted for up to 300 degrees F, as its used in boiling water in tea. As for using paint strainers instead of PTB i would be carfull as it not intended for high heat aplications. It could be burning some kind of plastic fumes.
And boiling water is only 212 F or 100 C, not very hot. Try heating some nylon up, like against a soldering iron. I've examined PTB material after getting a whiff, and it sure looks funky. Personally I use metal, like fine bronze wool. Steel wool is ok, but could rust.
Opps. After using bronze wool for a while, I've had a dark corrosion develop on the metal with some water-heavy juices, e.g. ecigexpress Watermelon. As a copper byproduct this could be more toxic than rust. Please take note.
