well, I wasn't wanting to rewrap for color it was for maintenance. I don't really want to be throwing good batteries away cause they have a tear in them. Just like anything else you just have to try to be as educated as you can because we are "playing with fire" I will give this a go eventually, next time I order batteries I will get some skins from RTD and see if I can feel confident enough to complete the task. Sometimes you just have to try it and recognize if it's over your head or not.

Most likely.. all major hardware stores I've checked had some cheap models as well. Menards, home depot and lowes.

Next time ya gota heat shrink a wire try the heatgun! Makes it look perfect. I've used a lighter for decades until couple of years ago. crazy nice.

I can't remember where i bought mine now cause I dont see it online. like I said I use the lowest setting like 250 degrees for heatshrink.. everything I see out there are 759-1000 watts. Basicly as soon as the heat hits it it will shrink. So just rotate is battery quick so it don't get too hot.

I use a hair dryer, but I do have to cover the back to reduce airflow. That's not exactly good practice, and if I was not really good at "1,2,3, release!" it could turn out terribly. I've still got Halon fire extinguishers, so I know I can suppress a serious fire serious fast, and usually don't consider when talking to others that they prolly haven't even got a fire extinguisher in sight.

I'm just guessing here, but I'm thinking the spring needs the weight of the battery to drop. So if the battery is "suspended" by the sides of the mod, it can't put any downward pressure on the spring. Something that needs to be tested, certainly, but for now, I'm erring on the side of safety and being cautious.

This is a problem for me meaning I don't understand. Why would you need the battery to drop away from the positive post? Doesn't the spring drop regardless if the battery is there to apply the pressure to fall away from the positive post. I just want to understand.

No it does not. Without the complete circuit, from the positive post through the battery and down to the spring, it will not collapse. It needs the hot current for the spring to collapse. That collapse breaks the circuit and prevents further damage.
