Purpose of bridge and wick in bottom feeder???

The bridge and wick hold liquid so you don't have to feed as much. I haven't used a bottom feeder yet but I noticed this when I tried dripping with a debridged/dewicked atty, got quite annoying.
Some people say flavor is better when removed but I couldn't tell a difference. I could see it if the wick was burned or needed cleaning.

I have a bottom feeder but, sometimes I drip it anyway when I want a few hits of something else.
