Purpose of water in DIY e-liquid

I'm going to be making my 1st batch of DIY juice tonight. I ordered the Premium DIY kit from DIYFlavorshack & was thrilled with the purchase. Some of the recipes I see use water. Can any of you experts tell me what the water is used for? Also, does it have to be distilled?

Also, I purchased 60 mg nic with the kit. I've read that it's best to 'cut' the nic, but I can't find the post that told me how to do this. Any tips would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks so much for the help! Wish me luck!! :unsure:

Lots of people use distilled water instead of PGA to cut the VG and make it thinner. AS to cutting your 60 mgs it depends on what mg. you want to vape. I usually make a 30 ml bottle of 40 % PG 10% PGA and 50% VG, just depends on your preferences and use that as my base. I usually start with a 5 ml bottle.Then figure out how much flavoring I need to mix with my base to make up half the bottle 2.5 then fill the rest with my nic which should cut it to 30 mgs. Many recipes out there you just have to look. I'm sure someone else can give you some direct links to check out.

Ok, so if I want to make 30 mg nic (for my simple brain example), then I would cut it with 50% PG or VG. Is that right?

Yes and no. Yes if you wanted no flavor juice. No if you wanted to flavor it. I have attached a simple juice calculator. It's an EXCEL file.

As sanfordf said if you just want unflavored 30 mgs then you would simply go half and half, but I like flavor so I add my flavor percentage to my base then go half and half. Sorry I'm not good at explaining.

This interests me - do you mean you calculate your recipe using 60 mg unflavored, and then 1/2 the entire recipe? I don't think I'm understanding... :unsure:

Half nicotine liquid and one half of the PG/VG/Flavor mix.

About 20 drops of flavor equal 1 ml. So, say you need to add 20 drops of flavoring to get the taste you want. If you want 10 ml of finished product, you'd use 5 ml of the nicotine liquid, 4 ml of PG/VG, and 20 drops (1 ml) of flavor.

5 ml + 4 ml + 1 ml == 10 ml liquid. 5 ml of the nic and (4+1=5) of the VG/PG/Flavor.

... an example of a recipe resulting in an 80/20 PG to VG at 24mg from 50mg flavourless liquid.

I like cutting my VG 4/1 or 20% of the total with:

  • distilled water; or
  • a combination of distilled water and PGA (maintaining the 4/1ratio); which
  • renders the consistency (viscosity) the same as PG, while not sacrificing vapour.
That is why when you look at the recipe and add PGA and distilled water together, the total represents 0.4 ml or 20% of total VG, whilst being just 4% of the total mix
