Hello and welcome to the forum dmwhit. Glad to have you here!:)

If you are getting a burnt taste (we call those "dry hits"), if usually means your wick cannot pull the eliquid fast enough to keep up with your battery. There are a couple of things you can do:

1. Dial down your voltage. This will vaporize the eliquid at a slower rate (if your battery allows you to do this)
2. Decrease the airflow, if your tank has adjustable airflow. The decrease in airflow will increase vacuum inside the tank's atomizer, which should increase the flow of juice to the wick..
3. Take a sharp draw (or two) on your drip tip (without engaging your battery). This will pull more eliquid into the coil so that it will be available when you press the battery button and take a draw.

You will get the feel of this over time and develop a sense of how often you will need to do this to avoid "dry hits". The PG/VG ratio of your eliquid also comes into play, as VG is thicker than PG . If you use high VG try adding a few drops of distilled water to your tank to thin out the eliquid.

First off love the screen name. I have a Protank mini 2 myself and started out with a variable voltage bat as well. Your issues could be the result of several things happening:

make sure your coil/atomizer is screwed all the way in as well as being clean. I found my mini is finicky with some batteries and doesn't make a solid connection with the battery terminal. That being said the center terminal is adjustable on most batteries take a small screw driver a lightly pry up on the center piece. You could go with a lower ohm coil, the lowest kanger has for that tank is 1.5 ohms which should be sufficient enough. taking long, slower drags helps as well. As for the burnt taste after a good hard hit is most likely due to the wick not delivering your juice to the coil fast enough, this has happened to me when i really pull hard and fast on the tank. I dont know how long you wait in between pulls but try waiting a minute or two in between drags coupled with a slower drag should help fix this. like others have said playing with your pg/vg ratio can be of benefit. i also agree with starting with a fresh full tank lowering your voltage to the lowest setting and gradually increase voltage till the desired affects are produced

Happy Plumes!!!

Kanger recommends 5-7.5 watts of power for their single coils, so make sure you don't exceed that wattage. You clearomizer just can't wick fast enough to support high-wattage vaping.

You may also consider buying a airflow control base for your PT2. It will let you regulate how much air goes through your device and may help with dry hits--especially if you're using thick juices.

Kanger Upgraded Stainless Steel Original Aerotank Base.

Happy vaping!

This might be contrary to some other advice but it's what worked for me with the mini Protanks. I was having problems with burnt hits and talked to my local vape shop. They drilled out the air holes in the base to 1/16th. Fixed the problem immediately. Turns out the problem wasn't wicking but air flow. I have done the same thing now to a number of MPT2 and 3's with great results. I reckon a air control base would do the same but cost you. I also run them at about 7.5 watts.

Also, Never screw your tanks down all the way. It will drive your center pin too far down then you have to pry the pin back up. You can also destroy the insulators on some mods that way.
