This is very true. But if your wick material lasts as long as ceramic why would you need to keep buying material?

Ok you are one of those only your answer is right people. I am done. Enjoy your ceramic.

I personally don't like the idea of something that is hard to get (treated ceramic) when cotton yarn won't be (heck I could spin it if necessary since I spin and know growers).

Congrats I am sure you had fun doing it.

Some of us are not ready to do SS wick yet much less dive into ceramic and do need the information in plain old wicking material sources.

In my case I like the idea of being able to go to wall mark and buying a ball of cotton yarn to rewick my protank and octopus. Should wicking materials become difficult to get or I run out at a bad time I want to know how to improvise.

Hi Myrany,
There is lots about cotton on ECF, but with how big this place is getting its getting hard to find things that I remember. This is not what I was looking for but, it may be helpful.

I'm not going to bother trying to treat the ceramic stuff myself. I'm going to order it from that guy and give it a shot. In the mean time, I'm going to get some cotton and see how that works. On ebay there is a #2 size and a #2/0 size. Which is the right one if I wanted 1 or 2 mm wick?

I'm interested in the hemp wick as well, I hadn't heard about that option.

All of the aforementioned vendors sell basically the same low-quality stuff. It's all twisted pair silica or worse yet cheap fiberglass. There is only one vendor I know of in the US who sells the german silica that I personally swear by.

RTDvapor.com-
Wick and Wire : Silica Wick

I've had this stuff going for almost a month in two different drippers. Doesn't really get brittle, doesn't need to be pre-torched. Holds together nicely during coiling also. Well worth the $1/ft price. I've yet to try it in my genesis though, my wick and coil have been too stable to mess with lol.

That was one of the vendors that had awful taste.

I think I read too much. I am new to this and already take my brand new MT3 (bottom coil) apart and replace the coil and wick with cotton ball. I have no idea how you do it but mine is not seal. I tried several times but every time I fill it with fluid, it leaks like hell, all over my battery and hands. I tried 3 times. The last time I did, I pack it too much that it was hard to the little pipe down. I even thought it might not wick well because the cotton is so pack/hard. Still, it leaks. I guess I have to go look for the organic wick. Yarn or hemp?

Here are the sizes for all the cotton wicks:

6/0 = 1 mm
5/0 = 1.25 mm
4/0 = 1.5 mm
2/0 = 1.75 mm
1/0 = 2 mm
#1 = 2.25 mm
#2 = 2.5 mm
#3 = 2.75
#4 = 3 mm
#5 = 3.25 mm
#6 = 3.5 mm

That's for square braided...It's probably the same for all cotton wicks though.

I just got #2 in the mail today...looks a little big to fit into my protank/evod coils, but I haven't tried yet. Plus you can just pull apart square braided into individual strands with some work, so guess it's nothing to worry about. The one I got says raw, unwaxed, and unprimed...I don't really know what that means but it is probably better than primed and waxed .....

You must be doing something wrong then everytime I have put cotton balls into a coil they have never ever ever leaked. You have to make sure there are no little holes that go to the coil when you put the top post back into the mt3 base...you know the thing you have to take off the put the cotton in. the cotton shuld be covering that entire hole when you put the post back in.

I detract my original statement about not being interested in cotton and will be trying some of this stuff. I'm going to place an order soon.

Alright, another experience tonight. I went to Michael and got a ball of 100% natural hemp. Boiled it for 1.5 hours.
Undid the cotton ball wick I did last night. The wick was completely burned off at the coil, gone. The flavor wick on top was still there. Just want to add that smoking cotton ball smell terrible.
Now, I have 100% natural hemp wick. It tastes different, not as bad as cotton ball but the flavor is not there anymore. Also, my clearomizer now only work with my vision spinner. When I put it into my Ego-Twist and press the button, the light flash and turns off. I am tired.

I'm all for cotton and use it exclusively in all my clearo's, when I got my Aga's I found using cotton in them a little more challenging. I tried all manner of SS hybrid wicks using both silica or cotton with mesh and then only SS. My challenge was to make a cotton only aga-t wick.

At first the cotton would just burn up quickly but after much research, trials and lots of errors I got it all working well if some what crudely. I vape a 2.4Ω coil with cotton at 3.8v. For me the cotton wick will last just over three weeks but as you can see the coils get really gunky and everything needs cleaning But not because of poor wicking. Just gunky coils. This wick has gone through 25ish ml's and is 2 weeks old and no burnt or toasty vapes on it yet.

I have read Hemp wicks work very well too and mostly wick better and faster than cotton. I also understand that because Hemp's capillary action is so effective, one can take longer/ double draws without scorching the wick. My drags are about 6/8 seconds long (I don't have a divers lungs) I can't handle more than that without choking. And honestly any longer and I do experience the toasty vape especially if I'm chain vaping. I'm hoping LovePedals Hemp will tick all my boxes.

If anyone is interested in Hemp see this thread >>Just Hemp<<

I get a scratchy throat when using silica wicks, Organic wicks are really just as simple and easy to use. With organics it's just a matter of preference and technique;)
