Jesus taught in parables. But, there is a difference between one parable and the others. What is the difference between all the parables and the one about Lazarus and the rich man? This one is easy!
The difference between the parables is that with all but one, Jesus didn't give a name to the people in the story. He always started out by saying, "There was a man who....." He gave a name to Lazarus, not the rich man, because his name didn't matter in the story. It was a true story, not just an example.
One evening, I was telling the story to my son about the man with the rebellious son who wanted his inheritance and took off. The story about the prodical son. I thought I'd done such a great job! He was 13 or 14 and the next day we ran by my mom's, so I asked him to tell his g-mom the story. He said, "Well, there was this dude named Prodical and he had 2 sons." I told him to hold it there. We thought it was funny.
