The instruction say to charge them for the first time for 8 hours. (I assume they mean straight out of the box) Then use them for 20 min, then charge for 1 hour. Then just regular usage after this special charging procedure. I don't know if it helps or makes much of a difference. I did charge mine for 6 hours first charge. I didn't do the 20 min then recharge thing but..

Usually they do come with a charge in them - but check it by putting one in the charger - if it goes green its good to use. Once they run out then charge them until the light on the charger goes from red to green - its not always 8 hours (if I remember it right it usually took a couple of hours - thats for he standard 510 not the 510 eGo, I thinkthat one took a little longer).

The hard part is waiting, tell me about it!

Yeah I know what the instructions say about :p8 hours, use 20 min, then charge an hour, regardless of green or red led on the charger. I was just unclear about whether this meant before or after first use. Wishful thinking, I guess.

Yeah, they came with a charge, It went from red to green after a few minutes then, the green light pulsed every few seconds, and now it's just a solid green light. I want to maximize battery life so I guess I'll wait and follow instructions exactly.

Ummmm...not nicotine. ;)

I went down to the local tobacco shop to ask if they had any e-cig accessories. Showed 'em my 510. They said "we used to carry those but they broke all the time so we got something better, "the red dragon."" No extra batteries, attys, juice, just carts. And the red dragon looks like a cigarrette with the brown filter end. ICK! Ahh well. It may well be better, I dunno, but I was recommended the 510 by someone who does this.

I always used mine when the light went green - I dont htink I waited 8 hours on any of them. Once the battery is fully charged it wont charge further - li-ion batteries stop once they're full. Its cool if you want to wait though - Im jsut saying I dont think you need to lol.

I believe you, you've been doing this awhile. I'm going to probably try the company method with one and the common sense method with the other, alternate usage and see if one lasts longer. I'm OC that way. :p

Don't bother with the 8-hour nonsense. That's a holdover from NiCAD and/or NiMH days. When the light goes green, that's it. It's full (or the charger thinks so anyway -- but we'll assume your charger is fully functional). Why Joye is still printing that nonsense in their instructions is beyond me.

Lithium-ion is a very clean system and does not need priming as nickel-based batteries do. The 1st charge is no different to the 5th or the 50th charge. Stickers instructing to charge the battery for 8 hours or more for the first time may be a leftover from the nickel battery days. -- Battery University
