question about passthrough

Now, I've read a few different things on passthroughs... First I've heard that a usb cord on it's own puts out 5v, and that makes me think it could be wired straight to a switch and atty and be good to go. Other places I've read stuff about "dummy batteries"? Not sure what that means exactly.

Basically I'm asking what set up there needs to be to make a passthrough device.

If you are a Joye 510 user and want 5V you need a 5V@2.5A power supply.
