Years ago I quit smoking with snuff, mostly I used Skoal and Copenhagen. I never had any serious gum problems from it, no "pre-cancerous lesions" or anything like that. Yet my parents and friends nagged me about getting oral cancer (instead of applauding my decision to switch to a healthier tobacco product). That's just an anecdote of course but the latest scientific evidence doesn't point to snuff and chew causing cancer. The warning labels on cans of snuff and "facts" exist out in the media because of anti-tobacco propaganda propped up by outdated research, not good science.

well if you use chew to quit smoking, yay for you. if you use anything to quit smoking yay for you. this doesn't change the fact that your harm reduction is far more disgusting than the original filthy habit. the thought of a spit cup is making me want to vomit immediately. Chewing tobacco is just plain gross. I also happen to believe that it does cause cancer, this is based on personal experience, not a study mind you. On any given day I have a cut in my mouth, I either bit my cheek or got hit with something at work, bumped into something, now not a deep bloody cut but a shallow one that may not even hurt. the cheif demographic for chew are blue collar workers (such as myself) or pro baseball players (such as my fantasy self), two very active groups, who happen to get cuts in their mouths frequently. In a sterile study chew may greatly reduce harm, in practice I do not think it would. keep in mind this is all just my opinion. and I might be delirious because I have some sort of plague bronchial infection after quitting smoking.

Your ignoring data that has been gathered over the years from Sweden where snus is prevalent and these are not sterile studies. See my post #7 and Kristin's #10. You can of course hold any opinion that works for you, but if you would like to learn more about how it actually works the information is easy to find.

Chew has fiberglass that cuts little tiny holes in your lips to deliver the nicotine. Chewing tobacco is full of chemicals and I mean FULL. It is not the nicotine that causes cancer, although it can cause high blood pressure and other heart related problems. The chemicals are the culprits causing cancer not the nicotine.
oral cancer rates per 100,000 users is 3.6%.the same as non users.
there isn't any fiber glass in chewing tobacco.

Menthols are rumored to contain fiberglass. According to this canard, the evil cigarette companies secrete the substance in the product in an effort to better transmit that menthol sensation and nicotine kick by way of causing tiny cuts in the smoker's throat and mouth. This same rumor also attaches to smokeless (chewing) tobacco, especially to the Kodiak brand.

There's no fiberglass in cigarettes. Granted, RJR did try using a fiberglass shell on its flopped smokeless cigarettes in 1994, but that part of the contraption wasn't ingested by the smoker; it was more of a housing, if you will. Other than that, no fiberglass.

The fiberglass rumor parallels similar falsities about Carmex lip balm and tampons. But of course if consumers overuse lip balm, they will come to rely on it and afterwards have to continue using the product. That little detail of life isn't in dispute, but rather than accept it, some Carmex users prefer to believe the evil manufacturer secretes ground glass in the product to roughen users' lips and thus enslave them to the little jars with the yellow lids. Likewise, a cyber-rumor that swept the Internet in 1999 claimed evil tampon manufacturers were putting asbestos in that product to promote bleeding and thus ensure women went through more tampons per period. The common sense realization that if the government had deemed asbestos far too dangerous to have in the walls of homes, it certainly wouldn't passively watch from the sidelines as consumers stuck the same substance inside themselves failed to occur to as many people as one would hope, and this rumor about asbestos flew from one inbox to another.

This may be new to some people... but you can use Skoal or snuff without using a spit cup. Especially if your goal is to quit smoking, rather than chasing a nicotine buzz. There are plenty of ways to use smokeless tobacco that are discrete and socially acceptable, especially with newer products that come in pouches or dissolve in the mouth.

I actually found snuff easier to cut back on than cigarettes. The withdrawl was a lot less serious.

I'm adding smokeless tobacco to my current quit, only using vaping to deal with the craving for smoke, and it seems to be working. Smokeless tobacco has ample nicotine and tobacco alkaloids.
