Question on Aftertaste

So I got my 510 today - and it's quite interesting. I've been using it on and off, but I have a question.

First, I didn't realize that the first cartridge on the atty is blank . So I pulled on that a couple times before I realized something was amiss. I popped a new cartridge on (the one that came with the starter kit - MLB HIGH, it says) and noticed vapor, flavor, etc.

But now, whenever I pull on it, I have a slight aftertaste that's hard to describe - but it's not terribly pleasant. I blew out the atomizer before changing cartridges (as was suggested on here), but I'm not sure if I'm getting the proper flavor. Any suggestions?

1) Where did you get your juice?
2) Does the aftertaste taste sort of like perfume?

I haven't bought seperate juice yet (although I'm ordering some from cignot) - I'm using the pre-filled carts that came in the 510 starter kit from AmericasBestBuys.com (looks just like the 510 kit from cignot).

Maybe slightly like perfume. It's very faint, but definitely noticable. It kinda sticks around in my mouth awhile - I have to drink some water or something to make it go away.

What happens at the "atomizer factory" is that they use what is called a primer of juice to keep the wick and coil moist for shipping. Since you pulled a few hits off the empty cartridge without vapin' juice, you basically vaped primer. If you had a bottle of juice to refill your own cartridges you'd just have to put a couple drops in the atty a few times and it would get rid of the weird after taste. You could try boiling the atty in hot water to get rid of the taste, you'd just need a fresh wet cartridge after it dries.

Ok - I have four more pre-filled carts (hoping this shipment gets here before too long) - so you're saying I should boil it to get that primer taste out, then slap a fresh one on there? I saw a large post about cleaning, I should look in there?

OMG, Don't start cleaning your attys in boiling water.
Considering you have new attys, there is no good reason to use aggressive cleaning methods.

Now, if the thing was 2 weeks old then I would agree but in this case no. IMHO, don't use water. Use something that evaporates quickly, such as PGA or vodoka.

Be patient and wait for the juice to arrive. The problem with cleaning the atty using water is the atty must be completely dry before using it again. If it isn't, the thing will never work properly.

Ok, excellent. I shall wait for the liquid.

I did try the fresh atty with a new cart - there's still a hint of that flavor, but it seems to be going away.

This leads me to my next question: should I buy a new atty for each flavor? I've read that some flavors can be particularly tough to get rid of.

Also, should I stick to certain type of base per atty (i.e., only VG on one, only PG on another), or can I alternate without issue?

Thanks again for all the help!

Ok - thanks for the quick responses. I've got a 2nd fresh atty. I blew it out (from the threaded end), a couple drops of funk came out. So - should I try this with a fresh cart? Or try the boiling method before trying again?

If you are sure you got all the primer out, go ahead. Use short controlled drags to get the required wicking action. Then progress to longer controlled drags. Keep in mind that it takes a bit of time to get the atty conditioned. Initially the atty will suck up more juice.

Too bad you didn't order xtra juice with the initial order.

You should try to keep types of flavours specific to the atty: atty A for tobacco flavours, atty B for fruit flavours and atty C for drink flavours.

I don't bother at all with using different atomizers for different flavors.
Even atomic cinnacide!!

I really don't understand why people have a problem.
From my experience it seems if you blow them out well, the flavors will not linger long.

I don't hesitate to switch any of my flavors at any time.
I just blow the atomizer out good and move on.
And I haven't had any issues.

DISCLAIMER: I don't smoke menthol, so perhaps that may be different.

I DO use different attys for minty and cinamon type flavors as I found that although I can get rid of the cinamon without TOO much trouble, the mint ones just refuse to clear up.
Don't wash your attys - please just..don't. lol Not unless its a last gasp attempt to resurrect one from near death.
I know people say cleaning doesnt hurt them but I have never found that to be the case - for me - and mine last an average of 3 months (genuine joye 510s) and Ive not had any taste issues with them either.
Im also a direct dripper, and blow out the attys between flavors (and the occasional flood lol).
Good luck with your new liquids - you should find that improves your experience immensely. A good juice can be the difference between giving up and making it work.

What should I order to fill the cartridges? Blank carts? Is there a certain type of filler I need? Sorry for so many questions, but I'm a bit overwhelmed.
If you're overwhelmed now, I should let you know you just asked a question that will provide more overwhelming answers than anything else you could have asked.

You should check into the Cartridge Mods subforum at this point.

I'll second a look at the cartridge mod section. Once you get the liquid and blank carts and fill them you'll realize that the cart seems to hold much more than you can vape. That is once the cart seems dry when you go to refill it you won't need nearly as much juice to refill as the initial fill. That's because the stock fill material isn't very good at wicking liquid to the atomizer. So when the atomizer seems dry there's still plenty of liquid left behind in the fill material. All those pages of mods in the cartridge mod try to improve on that. Personally I use the DSE901 and those cartridges will fit on the 510 and I've found the straw mod works very well for me.
