Hi Blake, I'm rather glad you brought the topic up. I too am one that likes to exercise my brain pondering questions. I thinks it's a good thing, keeps us living our lives mindfully.

So much of life is a series of trade-offs, we try to find some balance between doing the things that we enjoy that might not be so good for us, but not doing them to the point that it damages our health or ruins our lives.

There was a study done about 10 years ago on men and cholesterol levels. It found that the men with lower cholesterol levels lived longer, but suffered more from depression. I still use that study as my excuse to use real butter.

I REALLY enjoyed smoking, even though I knew it was bad for me, even though it was a contradiction to how I lived the rest of my life (i.e. taking care of my health), it was one of the things I've found that helps me feel happy. In reality it may be nothing more than an adult version of sucking on ones thumb for comfort. Frankly, I don't care. I tested the alternative (not smoking) and I was miserable, it didn't feel like an alternative, it felt like punishment.

Am I replacing one addiction for another? You betcha! I am absolutely giddy that this thing was invented. This is the answer to the question that I have been asking for 20 years, how can I find something that gives me the pleasure of smoking and doesn't kill me.

As far as I'm concerned, there are 2 basic addictions in smoking -- the nicotine and the smoking itself (the hand-to-mouth movement, inhaling, something to fidget with, etc.) Gum or the patch probably works pretty well for people who are only addicted to the nicotine. They were useless for me.

My initial goal with vaping was to get off tobacco. So, yes, I was replacing one habit with another. I was replacing a deadly habit with one that was a lot less harmful. Inasmuch as I had given up on quitting, I was happy to at least reduce the harm I was doing to my body.

As it happened, a little run in with pneumonia last week resulted in my dropping my nicotine level to zero but I would have been happy remaining at 12mg forever if that was what I had been comfortable with.

vaping at 0mg, on the other hand, will be with me for life. I successfully quit twice before this. Both times all it took was one super-stressful day for me to bum one cigarette and think "that didn't taste good." A week later I was buying a carton.

My replacement addiction satisfies me, keeps me off tobacco and saves me a ton of money. I'm happy.

I am supposing that using the e-cig to rid yourself of all the toxins first, get accustomed to that and feel better, then go in for the big kill - lowering and ending the nicotine intake, along with the hand/mouth habit, is a splendid way to go. Doing it in stages, dealing with one issue at at time - not so overwhelming.
my thoughts exactly. im getting in a "routine" of vaping on a daily basis, then im going to lower my nic 6mg at a time maybe over a period of a couple years hopefully to zero nic and still vape for the ritualistic aspect and flavor. kind of like a pipe smoker doesnt freak out cause they gotta hit their pipe, its like a step outside n smoke for a bit and be alone with your thoughts. the thought of being in more control of my nicotine intake made it so much easier to step away from cigs, a feeling of freedom, do it at my own pace, not some 3 month nicorette quitting program with the guilt of having a cig when im not supposed to.

I didn't have the Magma but I believe it is just like the 510, only more costly. Volcano was a good start for me even though I spent over 100.00 cause I didn't know I could refill the carts and I bought a bunch of them. Knowing what I know now, I would only recommend the 510, the ego or better yet, the Lazer for people who aren't ready for big mods.

The Lazer from Ikenvape is one of my most prized PVs and I use it every day (have 4 of them), even more than the chuck or other mods. Love those little lazers and they don't cost a lot.

Once again I appreciate all the responses and apologize if I ruffled anyone's feathers. I am from the school that you don't learn unless you ask questions. I now know that it is an individual matter of why someone switched and whether or not it is considered an addiction or not.

Rosesense: I see in your signature line that you have listed VOLCANO, I have been reading up on the product, especially their VOLCANO MAGMA and am curious as to whether or not you like the product or not?

Thank you all for your responses, I appreciate it.

I started vaping because I did not like smoking anymore and could not stop. I was able to stop smoking by replacing the smoking need with vaping. I would say I replaced one really bad habit with something that I truely enjoy. I enjoy trying different flavors and vaping as much as I want, and not getting sick from too many cigarettes.

I wish you all the luck in your vaping adventure.

Good questions, not even close to feather-ruffling ones ;)
I didnt start to quit, I started to cut down on cigs - I did quit but it wasn't by design - and it was sort of against my wishes lol. I think for me the hand/mouth action is more of an 'addiction' than the nic - but is it trading one addiction for another? Hmm..honestly I don't know, if I didn't smoke I might eat tons just to satisfy the same urge, (or bite my nails even) and I wouldn't call that an addiction but an ingrained habit. It could be either though I suppose, depends on how you define it, either way Im not bothered as long as I can do it in a 'safer' way than smoking a cig. It enjoyable, and doesn't bother others :)

I don't have any plans to quit vaping anytime soon and did not start using my e-cig as a stop smoking tool. I am perfectly happy indulging my nicotine addiction in what seem to me to be a less harmful, cheaper, and better smelling manner. However, after almost a year of vaping I have noticed that my chemical dependancy seems to be reduced. When I was smoking I was in the habit of have a cigarette or 2 about every 2 hrs while at work during my breaks. If my break got delayed, at about 3-3 1/2 hrs I would start to get antsy and panicky feeling and NEED to have my cig. Now I often forget to vape and go 5-6 hrs while at work. I start feeling a strong need to vape at the 7 hr mark. I believe that if I wanted to I could stop vaping now with less withdrawal symptoms that I had in the past when I quit smoking. Then again quitting has never been my biggest challege. It was staying off the smokes. I quit several times for 6 months and once for 18 months while I was pregnant and nursing, but I'd go out drinking with the girls, bum a smoke and have to buy a pack. Now I have my e-cig and have no desire for a cigarette.

I have substituted vaping for smoking mostly. At four months, I still have to have that last 2 or 3 most days. I do enjoy vaping much more than smoking and not just for the taste, but for the fact that I've been able to configure my vaping equipment to what I want. I would like to get completely off cigarettes, analogs as they call them here, but I'm not in any big hurry, I'm sure it will happen when it does.

You asked about the Volcano Magma. Yes, its a type of 510 and that's one of the PV that I use. I really like it and until I built my NicoStik, it was what I used mostly. I also have the Volcano (L88b, similar to a Blu) and use it daily too.
