I just saw on the news that our Michigan stop smoking hot line has been shut down till September 1st. They logged 65,000 (yes, 65,000 is correct) calls in 5 days and are overwhelmed. So, it is OK to stick it in our a** on tax hikes (sorry, vulgar I know) but if you ask for help quitting a habit the state has made big bucks on, literally, F you. They will continue making big bucks on this, and are mucho happy doing so. Hey, citizens, enjoy your cancer.

The "cessation" hotline our state tried with tobacco settlement dollars was deeply insulting, staffed by anti-smoking activists who said things like, "You stink, why don't you want to stop stinking?"

I think yours just ran out of NRT supplies. Given the numbers of folks addicted to nicotine gum and its ridiculous price, I'm sure they recieved a fair number of calls from those folks and their friends wanting free gum.

UPDT - the story shows again how the states have abused the settlement funds and underserve those paying the bill:

LANSING -- After handling more than 65,600 callers in five days, Michigan's tobacco Quit Line has been shut down.

Last Wednesday, the hot line began offering callers free nicotine patches, gum or lozenges from the state to help them quit smoking or chewing tobacco.

The heavy volume of calls overwhelmed the hot line. On Monday, the state Department of Community Health said the hot line would shut down until October because the department has run out of the free products. The new budget year starts Oct. 1.

Nearly 2,200 people have enrolled in the quit tobacco program so far.
