My mother is at the ending stages of her cancer treatment, and when speaking with her radiologist yesterday they wanted her to quit smoking. She plans to use the Riva I bought her when all the treatment is done - she doesn't want to sour her experience while being sick all the time.

In any event, they were talking about their hypnotherapy class, and wanted to give her a scrip for Chantix. When she said that her son was smoke free for almost 10 months, and that he (me) used an ecig to do so, they said she should do that and that they had heard NOTHING but good about it. Glad to hear medical professionals giving not just the okay, but the recommendation! (Even if she did bring it up first).

Each day, more and more doctors are accepting e-cigs as a very healthy alternative to smoking cigarettes. As far as many of them are now concerned if you don't smoke traditional tobacco cigarettes then they are considering you smoke-free. That does not mean tobacco-free, so if the question on the forms asks about tobacco use, unless you are using 0 nic, you do use a tobacco product. I would simply write in next to my answer of yes (e-cig).

The other day when I took my mother-in-law to her neurologist appt for her follow up after having her stroke 2 months ago, (he's the same neurologist that I went too over a year ago when I had some problems), he asked me if I had quit smoking yet. When I told him that I had been using an e-cig as a complete alternative to cigarette smoking since last July, he was very supportive of them. He then started asking me questions about them as well, the main question he had was did I gain weight when I switched to using the e-cig. Told him no, I hadn't gained any weight and have actually lost some weight. He's impressed with the possibilities that e-cigs might offer with helping smokers give up cigarettes and is of the opinion that the nicotine will not pose much of a higher risk of cardiovascular problems or strokes than what people already have when they stop all nicotine use anyway.

I suspect it's a case where they won't recommend them, but will applaud their use if the patient brings it up first. I read today that some doctors are actually beginning to advocate the use of them - I worry about this, because the FDA might try to say, "See!? Told you they were a drug!" But hopefully, it will be the same as if a doctor recommends organic food or supplements.

Thank you guys for the well-wishing for my mom. She seems to be doing great, the "burn" from the radiation is still red but otherwise everything appears fine. And she's using her PV more and more often in 'normal' situations (rather than just when she's in my car heh).

Yes, it's amazing how most of our doctors applaud this "new-fangled" thing, and how others are so skeptical. But, really it all boils down to "Smoke" versus "Vapor"...see? Vapor even sounds better! Good luck to you Demarko, I hope it helps your mom. I went thru all this with my dear mom too, who had already quit smoking cold turkey years ago...she told me that she never stopped "wanting" to smoke. If only all these really good e-cigs and choices had been around for her then, it would have been easier on her.

When I talked to my own oncologist about the e-cigs, he was very interested & supportive of my choice, but still hesitant to recommend to others. If there could only be some information (brochures or cards or something professional and upstanding looking) that we could give them that emphasizes that these are "alternatives" to smoking cigarettes, rather than "smoking cessation devices", which always calls the unwanted & unfriendly attention of the FDA & Big Tobacco. And that it may accidentally result in not ever smoking another "cigarette" again! It's all in the wording, I guess.

Please wish you Mom well for me, and I'll be keeping her in my prayers...and this goes for you, too!

Glad to hear your mom is doing better. Most doctors don't recommend an ecig because the either have no info on it or they just don't know about it. Plus, according to my doctor, the BP wants doctors to prescribe drugs to get over smoking. My doctor hates it and has since been recommending ecigs to her patients...I converted her as well...LOL.
