Here in the Middle East, at least in East Jerusalem, shisha is a very acceptable social experience. Lots of very respectable people who don't smoke cigarettes will occasionally have shisha in a cafe. So my Arab friends don't find my setup strange or exotic, just really cool. In West Jerusalem, it's a bit different - the young North American tourists buy shisha to be 'exotic', which I find annoying, and try to pretend they're inhaling other products....idiots.
I was sitting in a cafe last week in one of the East neighbourhoods, with two ex-students, young women now in their early 30s, and they were having shisha and I was enjoying my iTaste... They said, "Oh! great! a portable, electronic shisha!" I found it very funny. I even made up a starter set for the mother of one of them, who is a heavy smoker like I used to be, and wants to be able to spend more time with her baby grandson.
They just thought it was incredible and amazing that I had managed to stop smoking.
