I get oxidation with raw aluminum - the "Shroud of Papa" appears regularly on my TRA in the form of my handprint.

The best thing I've come across to remove it without taking the tumbled finish to a polish is Cape Cod Cloths. They were a recommendation from Spydro in here and seem to be the least abrasive way to clean the metal.

If I remember correctly, there was a thread on here a while back on this very subject and I believe it was cautioned to not be very aggressive with cleaning the TRA as it would actually come out with more of a sheen to it than the original tumbled look...

Yep - when I was trying to solve my issue, I did a test patch on the base of the TRA with two other products and both took the tumbled finished off. I'm sure the Cape Cods would do that as well if you went too hard with it.

I have two copper plates (front and back) on a different mod that I won, was going to get some MAAS Was that by any chance one of the products you tried? Or anyone with experience with both this and maas? Did you also get the buffing cloth? Is that after you use a microfiber or something to remove the polish?

:2c: Well, I see the cloth as only the vehicle to carry away any grime dissolved by the CC solvent. So no need to rub hard, just wipe on, sit a bit, wipe off until they are clean grasshopper.

I learned of them back in the GP PAPS days for about half of mine that are AluBronze instead of SS/Titanium. Their more than beautiful high gloss finish naturally tarnishes because of the copper content, and can easily be scratched by anything that is abrasive. They are also the ultimate finger print magnets, but the chemicals left behind by the CC's helps keep those down as another benefit. None of my TRA's actually get black because of my hands. And since I started using the CC's the black rubs on the backs of doors has also mostly gone away. But I still clean them with the CC's because it is so easy and does not change the satin texture.

Crazy 4 years on mine and the tumbled finish is long gone from holding it so n much hehe..

No outter black stuff..

What you people got in your skin oil?? :)

The black hand and finger prints on my TRA are deeper than just surface. It's like they are imbedded in the metal. I must have some serious acid...or something...in my sweat. My hands do sweat a lot when it's hot.

I don't believe mine was originally TRA, when I got it I took it out to the garage and gave it a good polishing so it shined like a mirror. Unfortunately that wasn't very easy to keep that way so a decided that a brushed finish would be easier. After a few failed attemps at trying to find a way to get it even I tried a Scotch Brite pad. It was super easy, I put it in the sink and rubed it back and forth (top to bottom) with a little water running. Took about 10 min from polished to get a very evenly dulled look that still had some shine. Fingerprints don't show and if I didn't put it in my pocket with keys and coins it would still look like I just did it.

I polished the door on my TRA, a while back. I did it the ol' fashioned way; wet sanded it, in the sink, with #2500 grit sandpaper. Oddly enough, the polished door doesn't get the black hand and finger prints; only the unpolished back.
One of these days, when I'm feeling ambitious, I'll wet sand the whole body.

It's probably salt. I tend to run a tad salty myself (according to my wife, at least) and I get blackened marks much as you describe, so there's that. Plus, a salt solution is used to create an aluminum oxide patina in jewelry manufacturing.
