I decided that I like the raw look so much that I stripped the paint from my purple mini! I was nervous about this because I wasn't sure what I'd find under the paint. I took her all apart, stripped the spring screw in the process, taped up the 510 and used a piece of shrink tubing to seal off the center pin inside. The Grand that I stripped a couple of weeks ago was a perfect TRA underneath but this mini was not. It was unfinished aluminum that needed sanding. So I got to work. Here's what I've got so far.

I'm thinking of doing the door in the opposite pattern with the door polished and the stripes brushed. I'm also thinking of putting a polished stencil of something centered on the back, I just don't know what. I can't think of an image that's vape related and I want it to be. Maybe a Reo stencil? A reo on a reo lol! I need ideas!

Inspiring work that I really like.

Been thinking of doing similar to my very first Reo, a Mini CV that was almost all black when I bought it used. When I bought it I erroniously thought I could restore the original color, I didn't know that was not possible. But I also didn't know how I'd feel about a raw aluminum finish, not until I bought the LP Grand TRA. It's my favorite finish on the metal Reo's so far. I was going to resell the CV Mini and replace it with a new LP Mini TRA... but maybe I'll send it to Rob for LP conversion and try stripping it instead.

Spydro I stripped a silver vein standard Grand that I bought in the classifieds a few weeks ago and it was a perfect TRA under the paint. I'm assuming all of the vein finishes are TRA underneath, so this works out perfectly for you. Here is what mine looks like...

The vein finish came off far easier than the finish on my purple mini did. It actually came off in sheets that slid right off the body. The paint began to bubble and remove itself in just a few minutes. I'd definitely do it myself if I were you and then have Rob LP. You'll have your mini TRA in no time.

Thank you for all the kind comments everyone! I'm still working on it. I'm doing it all by hand and the stripes are a pain requiring tiny little pieces of sandpaper and lots of taping. I went ahead and put two more stripes on the back, one on each side vertically. I'm thinking about having hubs show me how to use our dremel to help me out, I'm thinking though the dremel would tear up the tape and screw up the stripes. I'll have to experiment with the dremel on something else first.

Oh and a handy little tip I accidentally learned this time around. If you replace a magnet in a door and it dries with the magnet sticking so far out of the door that your door won't slide on, set the door magnet side down in some paint stripper, soak over night, and the magnet comes right out so you can redo it. If it's a painted door the door will float on the paint stripper and not get to the paint, but you have to be careful about that part.

Thanks for the extra info and picture. That would be a win-win if the copper vein had a TRA finish hiding under it. :thumb:

That's a great idea, but if he is good with CAD he could make a door and engrave a penny in the door with a REO in the center of it like your avatar... That would look really cool.

This would allow you to play with scale as well - an actual penny is quite small.

Super idea for you to incorporate a penny, BTW.

I can't remember now what he said it was, but it wasn't CAD. He's not trained in CAD, unfortunately, cause my Reo penny would be awesome.

Yep - that's a CNC setup. One of those "C"s stands for computer, and where there's a computer, there's software and a way to import a model file to guide the machine.

Not sure how he's getting your doors done - they must be driven by a model of some sort (can't imagine that a reo grand door comes in the default palette of whatever software is being used). Maybe a geek at his work would need to be involved, but there's got to be a way to get this done.

I'll have to ask him more about it and see if he would want to get into that much detail. I'm sure there are guys he works with who are CAD trained and who could help him bring this to fruition. I'll give him a bit of a break from my door obsession for a couple of weeks and then hit him up again! I think I'm driving him a little buggy. :p

Penny, did you use some special kind of stripper on the vein finish, just common paint stripper, or??? Thanks.
