Hi :)
New member here...
I just bought the Eleaf IStick Pico 25 and I have a couple of questions...
I mixed my e-liquid (70vg/30pg) with a nicotine booster and some flavor.
I have the HW1 coil (0,2ohm) and am vaping on 25W.
But I get a really raw throat so I’m doing something wrong. Experimenting with different settings, wattage and temperature but not really sure what I am doing wrong. Maybe my nic-booster was somewhat strong (quit smoking, start vaping) so I diluted it a little bit (just added some more vg/pg in the mix) but not helping.
When I increase wattage it’s a little too hot for my taste, and a little bit loud also...
When I’m in wattage mode, do I need to adjust the temp or is that automated? Not really sure what’s the best temp/wattage setting.
Can someone give me some tips or share their settings so I can try it out?
Also is the HW2 coil better/softer for my throat?
I really like the feel of this mod but I need to learn a lot to get the experience I’m looking for I’m afraid...
Please help

What is your liquids nic mg/ml?
This isn't something that should be guessed at, it needs to be measured accurately.
Adjusting the temp / using the temp control mode is only for when using a coil wire type that is compatible with a temp control mode.
The HW1 head is ss316 so it can be used in either watt mode or SS t/c mode.
Probably best to use it in watt mode until you get some things figured out/gain experience.
Did you start off by properly priming the head?
Fully saturating all exposed wicking material by dripping drops on it & allowing time for them to absorb.
Then install in base, fill tank & let sit a few minutes to ensure wicking material is saturated.
Is the airflow set almost wide open?
Are you trying to MTL (slow smooth inhale) or DTL (deep hard fast inhale)?

Well, first of all if you are new to vaping, you are also detoxing. Drink a BUNCH more water. My throat got raw the first few days of vaping, and I did find going from lower resistance coils and more vapor to higher resistance MTL coils with a higher nicotine level was helpful... for me, but I still got that raw throat in the beginning. Stay hydrated, gargle with salt water, and do keep your watts low if you can.

If anything I might suspect a PG sensitivity, so I might try experimenting with different ratios of VG and PG to see if it makes a difference. It might, significantly. It certainly did for me, I really cannot tolerate much PG at all. However, it could be as simple as the process of quitting, and what that does to one's system. PG and VG are both drying agents, but I believe PG is slightly more so. I drank a lot of chamomile tea with honey and lemon juice, that helped soothe my throat as I adjusted. Best of luck,

Anna

The nic-booster is 20mg/ml so a pretty high one I guess. I measured it with a e-liquid calculator, but I diluted it after I read that it could be the reason of my sore throat, not very smart I guess... I should throw that away and make a new batch.
I adjusted the temp in that mode, so that should be ok. I primed the head also but I think I was a little too quick to try it. It can be possible I burned it a bit (core was a little brownish) so I put the HW2 core in now (want to try the difference).
I opened the airflow and that helped a bit but not much. Playing a bit with MTL and DTL, trying to find the thing I like.
Thanks for the fast reply. I will make a new batch and try again tomorrow. Hopefully my throat is all better so I can actually see if it’s helping. And be more careful with the measurements of the nicotine...

Thanks! I can try to do a 100% VG, but I thought 70/30 was pretty safe.
I used a vape before, I have a JustFog Vape and was using it regularly.. this was pretty much all PG and never had any problems with my throat, so I don’t think this is it but I can try it...
And thanks for pointing out the detox thing. Not really thought about it. I will drink more water :)

Maybe your nicotine is too high of a concentration. Common mistake people make is when they start, they go for the highest available. Very bad things ensue. It hurts a lot. Another thing, don't ever use temperature control unless you know that you're supposed to.

Try lowering your nicotine with a new juice, and maybe turn down your wattage.

If that doesn't help, change flavors. It could be a sensitivity to the flavor.

It could also be low-quality juice with some sort of additives, like alcohol that you haven't let evaporate.

It would help if I could stand in front of you and walk you through it, but those are generally good places to start.

thanks! Yeah I think I maybe exaggerated a bit with the nicotine... I will make a new batch with a lower dosage. Think that will do the trick. I will stay with the wattage mode and don’t touch the temp settings unless I know what I’m doing :)

That's a good idea. I've been vaping for what seems like a century, and I stayed away from temp control because it seemed pointless to me, but once you're ready, try it with stainless steel. It's really hard to get it working just where you want it, but it's not as bad as some people say it is.

That said, it's not for most people. I prefer straight up wattage still.

If you used to smoke 1 pack/day , vaping DTL at 12mg/ml will probably be enough for you. If you used to smoke lets say 10cig / day , DTL with 6 mg/ml nicotine will do the job.
6mg/ml nicotine seems to be the most common, and most people drop down to 3mg/ml after a while. Good luck!

Edit: Make sure your coil is ok.

Your sore throat is from the juice or the coil or maybe both.
Once you take a hot vape and lets say scorch the throat it takes quite a while for your throat to recoup, couple days of mild vaping. Every vape with a raw throat is like ripping out another chunk.
Taking that too hot a hit, inhaling too hard and too fast(like a cig) so your inhaling the heat also burns the throat some or irritates it enough to be bothersome.
Having a wire to wire contact or hot legs in the coil also creates too much heat then burns the throat.
Drier hit from under juiced wicking that your inhaling little to no vapor but again just the heat.
Pulling too hard from a unramped up or too cold of a coil your inhaling hot juice drops or juice particles that are enough to irritate the throat. Blow down some first till you see nice plumb out the air holes then begin to take the vape.
Subohming is so easy to over heat the build and inhale hot vapor enough to raw out the throat, another reason I reverted back to the 1.4-1.6Ω building.

Welcome and glad you joined.
I didn't think some other suggestions would be out of line, good luck with what you have to go on.
