RDA coil question

If you remove the cotton and dry burn the coils, they should clean up
I do the same thing (dry-burn and re-wick) for a little while, but I R&R the coils once I notice that they become slower to heat up. Seems to me that I re-do the coils about every 2-3 weeks, but I'm pretty picky about coil performance. And, ya know, wire is cheap! 
When I re-wick I give my coils (and the whole deck) a rinse under regular tap water, then I dry with paper towel to the best of my ability and dry-burn any carbon/gunk on the coils. Re-wick and good to go. No reason to change out the coils unless you're unsatisfied/wanna experiment or something has gone awry.

I've had the same coils for 6 weeks at one point with my unflavored.
However, with flavors I tend to go a week because even dry burning I can feel the performance drop off.

wow. Full year? My coils rarely stay in the RDA over a week. Not because they are bad or anything, but I just rip them out and rebuild them. One thing I liked about my cigars and pipes was the build up. Loading the perfect bowl. toasting it with a match and getting the false light. letting it sit a min and then truly lighting it and tending it so that I get the perfect burn all the way down. Or trimming the tip of a cigar, lighting a ceder splint and slowly toasting the foot before finally lighting it and enjoying the smoke. With my vaping as was already stated, wire is pretty cheap. I tend to only rewick a set of coils once before Im pulling them out and rebuilding something different.
+1 on cedar smoking a cigar. 
I switch back and forth between attys all day, so my coils don't burn up as fast as some do. You will notice a difference in the performance as they age though. The metal will also warp slightly due to constant heating and cooling too. When I look at a pair after a dry burn and see that there is no longer a clean cylindrical space through the middle, I build new coils. This usually happens long before the coil deteriorates to the point where performance suffers though. I guess it's a personal preference thing. Like Kaezziel said, wire is cheap. Build new ones when you feel like it. Practice makes perfect anyway, right?

II haven't used it enough to notice a drop in performance which sounds like the big indicator but I want the best flavour for my build so will start changing it out more.

For more flavor you can try twisted coils. They are easy and seem to make more flavor. Check out the coil builds sub forum.
Only times i have changed any coils so far is when they literally pop; and that happeded a couple times when quenching while dryburning.

I run my coils for about a month before i change them as long as there vaping how i like them, just change the wick and dry burn them whenver they start to get gunked up
My standard built coils tend to last me a month or two. I rewick RDAs every week or so and some of my tanks last up to a month.
Nice job on the coil build, Paul! It'll get easier with time and experience... even a little faster once you get consistent. You can even pre-wrap several sets and store them in a little pill bottle or something for quicker change-outs.
