So guys I finally built my first atty after gathering all the needed info and supplies. Now I Call it a ghetto atty as the "store" I went to Active surplus could not locate there roll of 36 G wire so I bought the innards of a hair dryer the heating element which uses 20-24 gauge nichrome wire for 1$ for around 5 ft I think. Now i attached it with longer leads and rather than solder or anything I just twisted the nichrome around some steel wire that are the new leads, works great. Used silica rope, I recommend burning it with a lighter first to get the binding **** off of it or it can be tasted for quite some time.

I must say that the wire takes longer to heat up and the smoke is thinner yet harsher is how i would describe it. I am used to a 510 but it performs like a weak 901. I can't wait to get 36 or 38 gauge wire.

I used an 801 ceramic cup inside of a 901 innards.

I am happy though because I will always have a backup material now if my atty dies. I would like to find a good alternative to the ceramic cup or a source for those cups?
anyone know of any alternatives or any sources for those parts?

Max.
:lol::shock:8-o:confused::rolleyes:

Max,
Nice job on your first rebuild and i'm sure there will many more. here is a good place to get NiCr wire and they send it in a regular enveolpe so i don't think it would be a problem mailing it you in Canada, e-mail them first to make sure. here is the linkhttp://www.ask.com/bar?q=jacobs+NiCr+wire&page=1&qsrc=2417&ab=0&u=http%3A%2F%2Fjacobs-online.biz%2Fnichrome_wire.htm
I'm not sure if what they would charge for shipping but in the USA it's free.
Keep up the good work
Carlos

Thanks for all of the replies.

Carlos thank you very much for the links and your kind words. May I ask what those little black ceramic cups that are in your Ghetto box aka juice box video are called? ?What would ?I ask for at home depot? Also do you guys get longer atty life out of your home made attys? Also are there different types of silica rope just I want to know if everyone else when they first turn on the atty there is smoke and some **** that is residual and then burns off of the silica rope?

I also built what I call the "true" wind proof lighter. I modded a batterry pack and made a small stove type element coil out of nichrome and its great for lighting cigarettes, although it is not very practical, but thats because I built it quick and not very well but hey its another application for the wire.

Thanks again.

Max.

Prateus,
I don't know what residual your getting but the silica I use does not do that. The biggest thing is to keep that silica moist to wet.
As far as What to ask for at HD is a trim piece.. If you look at it from the end it looks like the letter "D". You'll be able to see that it is a real dense ceramic and black in color. Now what I will tell you is to be very careful when working with this stuf because it will shatter and pieces fly everwhere. Please take all saftey percautions when working with this ... it cuts like glass!!!!
The same atty I have in my 801 post is still going strong and it's been 4 months now, I think. So yes I will last you a lot longer and eventhe stock attys I build, people tell me that they are still going strong. It's all a matter of playing around with different configurations and finding what works best for you

Hey Carlos,

I think what your using is not ceramic its actually Porcelain, much more dense then ceramic and has very a low absorption quality. If its breaks like glass its porcelain, definitely take precautions in cutting this stuff, broken pieces are as sharp as razor blades. Ceramic is much softer and cuts much easier, is very porous and will absorb liquids easily.
