I read a post about cleaning them by popping them in Diet Coke for 20 minutes then boiling them for 20 minutes and letting them dry overnight. I guess I'll give that a shot as I have nothing to lose. I can't lose all my atty's :-(.

The method I use for my attys is pretty close to Highping's cleaning guide. It usually works for me; well, it works or the atty dies - but that's uncommon.

I think that is the method I've been using and I really thought they were working. They get hot and I can hear the hissing but now that I compare it to the new one, I guess they are not working well at all.

What I've been doing is popping them in 3 minute denture cleaner for several hours or overnight, stirring every once in a while. Then I run them under warm water for 5-10 minutes, blow them out and let dry overnight. I've done that several times and I honestly thought I didn't have any problems. I tried 4 different atty's the last two days and really thought the problem was me. Last night, I could not take it anymore so I used the one atty I'd put away thinking I would not need it for at the very least a month and it was like instant relief. Finally....a good vape!!! It was a huge relief until I realized that it meant my atty's were not good :-(.

The problem with soaking/washing, is that it only gets out the liquid; removing the gunk that builds up is a lot trickier.

By washing the atty out in hot water, and heating the gunk to a powder, a second wash will remove it. For example:

Wash out the existing liquid by swilling the atty around in hot water, then blowing it out by putting your mouth over the battery end. Do this a couple of times.

Give the atty a shake, and another quick blow-through, put it on a battery and press the button until the coil glows - then let go. Give it 10 seconds to cool, then do it again; repeat this several times, I normally do this about 6-7 times.

Now press the button until the coil glows, and let go. You want to press the button again when the coil dims, and release when it's glowing. By keeping the coil glowing for about 20 seconds using this method, the gunk that's accumulated should be pretty powdered. Give the atty another hot wash and blow, then heat it up a few times to dry it out.

There is a reasonable chance of killing the atty if it gets too hot, so go easy at first.

Atties are cheap though - cheaper than a carton of cigs cost me so I tend to treat them as throwaway items and honestly on't expect them to last that long. If they last for months, GREAT! If they don't, no biggie its still cheaper than smoking. The trick is to keep getting spares enough in advance so you aren't stuck with one or 2 that vape like poo lol.
I'm glad youre back to happy btw :)

Thank you! A question though..should I still go through the process I already use first and do as you suggested? Should I try something else like the Diet Coke/boiling method and then do as you suggested?

I really want to bring these atty's back to life. I know atty's don't last forever but right now, I need them last a little bit longer!

That's true..they are definitely cheaper than smoking and even if they weren't, I don't ever want to go back to smoking. Unfortunately, 3 hospital stays in as many months (not me) make it so that I need to squeeze as much life as I can out of everything I have . You are definitely right though and I'm going to get as many atty's as I can as I can to make sure I always have spares. I don't want to go through the last two days every again!!

Too bad I came late into the thread. I suspected from the outset that the atties were just going south. Bear in mind that atties have limited lifespans. Also some variations are better and worse than others. I'm betting you got all yours from the same batch/supplier. With certain atties you get maybe 1-2 weeks of good vaping. Others apparently can last for months with good cleaning.

I honestly don't think the cleaning method matters as much as some people think. If you boil it, just make sure you boil it for awhile. If boiling it for 20 minutes doesn't do the trick, then the atty has just lost some effectiveness and it's time to move on. Note that atties sometimes will lose functioning incrementally before totally dying. My suggestion is, if the atty starts to suck, boil for 20 minutes. If it still sucks, toss it. Don't waste your time trying 5 different cleaning methods. I've been through that.

Thanks wolf! I kind of figured. I think I've been really lucky that they have lasted this long. When I stop to think about it. I've had the majority since April. Only 3 of the ones I have are younger than that. I did get them all from the same supplier but all their equipment has been top notch so far and if they only last a short time, they did pretty good :)

I am going to try highping's method and see if that works and take your advice if after that or boiling or whatever, they still suck. I really need to get some more atty's and tomorrow is payday...Woot! I truly appreciate the help!!

Where in OK/ I'm is SW OK...........it's supposed to be 105 this weekend. And if you remember it ain't no dry heat!

Ha! OMG..the heat in OK is killer and I can unequivocably say I'll never miss it!! I moved to OKC from Puerto Rico when I was 13, actually, to Edmond, then OKC, then Mustang/Yukon. Its such a sticky heat that you feel like you are in a sauna all the time...yuck! I will say though that the heat in Vegas and in Iraq is just as bad and those two are supposed to be dry heat...ha! That did not seem to make much of a difference.:)
