Rebuild Question

How do you get the PT coil down into the head using a 5/64 bit? This bit won't fit into the head of the coil. Just asking!!

It's a tight fit in most of the coil heads, won't fit in others. The dimensions of the heads vary slightly. I am now using a 16ga needle for builds and it fits no problem. Obviously, it is slightly smaller than 5/64" and a bit larger than 1/16". I would guess 1/16" would require 9 or 10 wraps to clock in at 2 ohm with 30ga kanthal. Or just use this nifty tool...

Pleased to say that after some experimentation my rebuilds are now blowing stock coils out of the water

Done some experimentation while waiting for my 100ft of 30ga to arrive.
Took me a while to find it as I'm in the UK and for some reason couldn't ship through Amazon.
Managed to find it on eBay though.

At the minute I'm trying to decide I prefer less wraps and a thicker single wick
Or more wraps and a much thinner wick with a wicking coil on top

The 2 seem to work very similar although I actually had some gurgle when not using a single thicker coil.

I don't know what ohms I'm getting as I don't have a reader at the minute, or a mod.
I'm using a spinner and a twist.
If wrap about 8 times I find I'm having to go up to around 4.3 for it to work well.
Normally a stock 2.2 coil I vape about 3.8/4.0
Seems to be working very good although it needs a hell of a break in before the flavour pulls through.
Once it does though WOW!

Not sure how many wraps i need to wrap to get to the 3.8/4.0 I'm used to but I will keep experimenting

I'm glad for you that you seem to have it squared away on building. But!!!!

I don't know what ohms I'm getting as I don't have a reader at the minute, or a mod.
I'm using a spinner and a twist.

Doing this without a way to test for resistant and shots is very dangerous in a sense that it will kill your battery dead if there is a shot in your Coil built.
Get yourself a digital multi meter and learn proper use.

Vapor's tool box for android is very useful also for this.

OK, so there's so many threads, and youtube videos out there, that I have read and watched for days, and I'm still thoroughly confused!
So, I'm wondering.. Which gauge of wire is best to start out with for first rebuilds? Also, I was thinking about getting ecowool, because I can't get a straight answer on how long cotton lasts before having to re-wick the coil. I'm going to be rebuilding protank/evod heads.

I want a low maintenence coil, that I know won't have any issues when I take it to work. Looking thru my drill bits, the only size that seats down into the notch on the heads in 1/16". I see a lot of people saying to use a 5/64" bit, but that doesn't seat all the way down the notch in the coil head.

I'm still not sure on which size of eckowool to buy because I've read mixed info on what the actual outter diameter of the stuff is. Which size eckowoll should I buy if I'm wrapping on a 1/16" drill bit?

I'm seriously thinking about just buying either the 2mm or 3mm stuff and using the method where you stick a pin thru it, and wrap around the wick.

Can someone help me clear all this up for me? I started vaping primarily to save $ over smoking, so I don't want to go wasting a bunch of money buying the wrong stuff. After days of reading, I still can't figure out what size wicking to buy, or weather to get 30 or 32ga kanthal. See where I'm frustrated?

One last question, can the eckowool be threaded thru a coil like cotton is? also, which size would I buy to fit a 1/16" wrap? Please help!

I haven't tried Ekowool, probably won't either. I already have a bunch of cotton on hand. The 1/16 drill bit will be excellent for wrapping a good microcoil with 30 or 32 ga. I just built some nice 32 ga. ones for a friend yesterday on 1/16. 6 tight wraps came in at 2.2 ohms, nice!!

Does torching the coil change its properties? Is it any different than dry burning? I do not have a torch; it would be a great reason to head to the hardware store. There is always room for a new tool.

The artistic wire coiling gizmo looks interesting. Are there any advantages to having all of the coil wraps touching each other? I've always used screw threading to evenly space the coils. Much like the toroids you wrap when building a ham radio.

A lighter will do the trick if you don't have a torch. I'm like you tho, any excuse for a new toy!! Seems to me you get more heat from your coil, thus better vape, when you wrap tight coils. If you've done it right, they will heat from the center out to the sides. Looks real cool when you test fire them. For the few dollars that the Gizmo costs, an invaluable tool for making great coils every time. And I get to wear my jewelers visor too!!

In my very short time of building I instantly switched to organic cotton, it's so much easier to manage.

Thanks for the replies, all. Sorry so long. I typed that right before going to bed, and then not checking until after work. Will a cotton wick last at least a week before re-wicking is needed? I ask more for my wife then me though, because I wouldn't mind it, but she'd get agitated.

I just ordered 100 feet of 30 gauge and 50 feet of 28 gauge for $10 with free shipping from this guy (lightningvapes). I ordered it on friday and it's already in the mail and on it's way north!

Lightning Vapes is good to deal with. Can order spare rubbers and seals at the same time and keep rebuilding them time and time again. Broke a few rubbers getting them out here and there and I am so happy I could buy the seals I needed.

boiled cotton yarn....you can break it down to 4 strands........

sometimes I take a new kangar coil, open it up, and replace the flavour wick with cotton......... one strand, or two strands, both are fine...
and neither one leaks or gurgles........

just doing a new experiment, wrapping a 5/6 32 gauge with all 4 strands through it, and no flavour coil......... not the best...
my process above replacing the flavour coil works better...

still experimenting though.......

Results on above experiment: sucks, don't bother

the first process described, where I just dry burn my factory coils, and replace the flavor wick with cotton,
it pretty foolproof......... repeat as needed..... it can make a factory coil last quite a while.. 2 weeks I find.... makes the need to rebuild almost obsolete..... but, i'm still after the perfect rebuild just the same...

So I just started making my own coils, and I did buy some Ekowool. Honestly, cotton is easier to work with. And when you get it right, it is OH SO GOOD. Put a little flavor wick on the coil I built for my Protank 3, had a touch too much...took just that little bit off tonight and the flavor is amazing. And it was already better than the stock dual coils. No idea of the taste difference with the Ekowoll compared to cotton as I never got the Ekowool to stay in place long enough to actually try it. This stuff resists scissors.

I think I will make some more now.

Using a little bit of bent Kanthal to draw the cotton wick through coil works like a charm. I had to stop there for a sec for another vape...man, I am loving this.
