Still somewhat new here, although thanks to this site I do feel quite knowledgeable. There's just some of those "why?" questions in my head.

For instance, I got tired of my protank 3 mini and aerotank coils only lasting a few days and have started rebuilding them. Using an MVP 2.0. So here's what I don't understand. My coils usually come out at 1.4 to 1.5 ohms. Now, in the stock protank coils I usually vape at 7 watts, sometimes 8 depending on the juice. That's typically good flavor, and also, if I push it close to 9 or higher I start to get that burnt taste. That's using either the stock 2.1 or 1.5 coils although since I'm using watts I'm not sure that would matter.

Now, when I rebuild my own, still at 1.4-1.5 watts I end up pushing about 10 watts for good flavor. No burnt taste even if I push it to 11. So the head scratcher to me is just that. If the stock coils always tend to taste burnt if I go to high, why do I find that I'm having to go so high for flavor on the coils I build and why am I not getting a burnt taste? I actually prefer the coils I do over the stock ones.

Here's what I know. The stock coils are dual coils, and when I rebuild I only use a single coil, 28g with about 9 wraps. And the stock coils use silica for wick and I'm using cotton. Is that the difference? Maybe a crazy question, but my mind always wants to figure out the why behind things.

Local place gave me one of the new kanger coils that have the wick enclosed rather than exposed. I haven't tried it yet. He was out of stock on all of the new ones except one of the new sub ohm .8 ones. I know it'll fire in my MVP, just haven't tried it. He swore by them and said flavor is better and they last longer. Anyone have any experience with the new ones?

The difference is the stock coils being dual coil, and your re-built single coil. With a dual coil head, the 10 watts is split, 5 watts to each coil. With a single coil the 10 watts is all going to that one coil.

Personally I prefer a single coil, with the right wattage, good wicking, good air flow, the vapor is warm, thick enough and flavorful. I think many of the dual coil heads were developed by the manufacturers to cut down on re-building and sell more heads....:)

I am thinking of sticking my hand in rebuilding these Kanger Protank3 coils myself using a single coil and wrapping around a zip tie to create a longer hole. I have seen many people talk about using silica wicks others saying to use Organic Cotton Wool. Would these be Organic Cotton Balls??? Or is there somewhere I need to special order the cotton?

Yep, just organ cotton balls. You can get them at any drug store. Wally World probably has them too. The zip tie idea sounds cool in the protank 3 heads. Let us know how it works out.

I use ekowool in my rebuilds with mixed sucess. Ekowool seems great to provide very good wicking but on the other hand, in my projects it also is easier to produce that dreaded gurgling because it wicks almost too well. I've been working with 1mm hollow and 2mm braided not hollow (not 100% sure this last one isn't counterfait but it does work wekk)

Last kanger I rebuilt, I've made two coils with 32awg kanthal A1 wire (8 wraps each) around 3mm silica wick and placed another 3mm wick in the middle of those two. All in all the head came out at 1.45 Ohms (prediction was between 1.4 and 1.6). Vapes quite nicely, no dry hits and no gurgling... for now...

Last week I was making single coils at 1.8Ohms with 28awg kanthal but I didn't like the results. Even at 15W, that thing wasn't getting hot fast enough or strong enough to produce good vapor. I'm starting to believe that with our variable wattage mods, thicker wire isn't always the best. If you have a mechanical mod, then yes, sure, the thicker the wire, the better the results but on eletronic regulated devices? I'm not sure anymore... I prefer wicking with 32awg right now.

Regards
Tony
