Rebuilding kanger head - popping sound?

So I've recently started rebuilding my own coils, and the first few have gone really well, but I ran into a strange issue.

single coil w/ a cotton wick in the kanger dual coil head. It worked, but it made this sharp, fairly loud popping sound when it first started firing. I fired it a few more times and every time, it started with a pop. I put a small flavor wick over the coil and that stopped the popping, but I didn't need a flavor wick the other time I did this same build a few days ago, so I can't figure out why it was making that noise in the first place.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the link. My coil was positioned too low and making contact with liquid at the bottom of my atomizer. Rebuilt one higher up and it's working great.
