Rebuilding micro coils question

When you thread your wick through the coil and add a flavor wick. Where do you cut the access wicks at? Close as possible or do you leave some what on the long side?

I snip my cotton wicks just at the end of the base cup, so that the ends, when assembled, are just touching the sides of the screw-in base
