Hello, a little about myself:

I am a recent E-Cig convert myself, going about 3-4 months now. I use an eGo-T 1000mh and vape 100% VG with 12mg nicotine, dripping on LR 306's and it seems to work well for me.

My dad, on the other hand, has been smoking for longer than I've been alive, somewhere near 30+ years. He is in his late 50's, and smokes Marlboro lights exclusively. He is relatively old-fashioned, and probably has no idea what a modern e-cigarette looks like, or how well it performs. I am obviously concerned about his health, but I want to make sure the first time I approach him about it, I make a convincing argument to switch (besides potentially saving his life, of course).

My questions are as follows:

What flavor(s) should I consider getting him here? I was thinking something fruity, but since he's kinda old, another flavor that most closely resembles Marlboro lights to go along with it? I'm not sure if this even exists or from which vendor(s)? I am sure he is smoking somewhere between a PAD to 30 cigarettes, give or take a few. Will 18mg of nicotine be sufficient if he will be using the same drip method I'm using above?

For all you long-term smokers out there (preferably in the older, 40+ age group): I am aware suddenly making a life-changing switch like this so quickly is bound to have some side-effects...do you guys/gals have any advice on what to be prepared for? Is there a specific approach I should take when trying to explain this to him?

Thank you, any input is greatly appreciated.

There are some really helpful members in the age range you mention on this site. I'm confident you'll find help here. I've read some fascinating threads here about just the kind of lifestyle changes you're describing.

There are "Reds" flavors out there that mimic Marlboros, and the "Lights" part is more nic level than flavoring IMO. For that lights usage I'd guess 18mg but I'd maybe have some 24mg juice to be sure (that way if it turned out 12 was more suited to him, you could just dilute it with a doubler liquid.)

For someone who wants to use the device throughout the day and possibly on the go, I'd recommend cartomizers. You can fill them up the night before or at the start of the day, then vape them for a while without having to fuss with them. (I mostly use cartos, just dripping when I feel like trying a bunch of different flavors.) You can even get prefilled cartos from somewhere like Smokeless Image, which is more expensive but less hassle than filling your own cartos. I recommend Boge 510 LR 2 ohm cartomizers, personally.

Well, I'm 50 and the only trouble I had was when my lungs started cleaning out all the tar. I had pretty good coughing fits after a couple of weeks. I had one week in which I couldn't taste anything.

Other than that, it's been a smooth ride. I have no problems with vaping, and enjoy it much more than smoking.

Welcome! I'm in that range you're referring to . . . upper 50s, smoked for 40 years (not counting the nearly 10 sneaking years, but buying my own) and made the switch without much difficulty a little over a month ago. And BTW, I had no desire to quit. I wanted a way to get through all these no-smoking inconveniences that are growing daily.

I started with a slim PV because I didn't want to get too much attention. After experiencing the benefits and assured that I could do this, I upgraded to a longer lasting battery PV that I'm truly enjoying. My next "step" is to switch to clearomizers so that I can better judge my refills and stay more prepared for the day.

I was fortunate to be introduced to e-cigs by a local distributor that works very closely to find the right juice and therefore was able to get a liquid that gave me the flavor of my brand of smokes and the right nic to get me through the detox stage. With that personal service rare, I'd recommend perhaps going with a flavor that simulates a cigar or pipe. I think that would be easier to switch to if the Marlboro flavor can't be met to satisfaction. For "me", fruit flavors just don't cut it. I want the tobacco taste, still . . . especially after meals.

The main things to explain is the health benefits . . . the coughing, short-windedness, etc goes away pretty quickly, and the fact that it's not quitting the enjoyable part of smoking, just the bad parts. There's also an e-pipe that may be an option that he'll take to. . . but in any case, it'll take time and some commitment on his part. At the very least, if e-cigs just replace part of his analogs for a while, then its a good solid start. You can definitely tell him IT DOES WORK and its nothing like the lozengers, patches, gum, etc.

Best wishes and keep on asking the questions . . . there's lots of experience here on ECF to give you ideas on what direction will work for your particular circumstances.

If you haven't already, use your PV around him and answer any questions he has. I used mine at a family event and every smoker there wanted one after they saw mine in action.

As for flavors, there is a thread in the main forum on the "2112 flavor of the year" where people listed their favorites. That thread has been a great resource for finding flavors that many other people enjoy. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-discussion/244945-2011-juice-year-award.html

My dad is using an 808 battery we bought him at thanksgiving. He still smokes, but uses that places like the bowling alley, where he cannot smoke inside. He is an ultra light smoker (some cheap brand, though it is still like puffing air!) Anyway, he seems to really enjoy desert ship from vaporbomb. It smells too strong for me to even want to try and hubby likes it on 5 volts but my dad likes it! Who knows. He also gets it in a lower nic, I think 8mg?

Hold on a minute, I'm still trying to get over people aged 40+ referred to as "old"...

I would recommend that you buy the Riva kit from Liberty Flights, lots of 2.0 ohm cartomizers from Crystal Clear Vaping, and some 18mg and 24mg e-liquid. The flavors are a bit tricky but here are my favorite vendors/flavors:

VirginVapor for Kona Coffee Milkshake
Vapor4Life for WowCoffee and other strong flavors like Wow Pancake, Wow Black Licorice, Wow Peppermint*
MyFreedomSmokes for Keoke Coffee and English Toffee - and unflavored nic juice for DIY
ParkesVaping for Snickerdoodle Cookie, Hopscotch, Malted Toffee and others

The bottom line is that there are loads of excellent e-liquid vendors out there and you won't know which flavor/strength your dad will love until you try a variety, many of which he'll probably hate. I would start with ECF vendors and check out the e-liquid reviews here on the forum.

* Vapor4Life has a new line of USA juices that I absolutely hate because they smell and taste too much like tobacco, so you may want to try one of those if you're looking for a tobacco flavor.

eGo type kit with 10 cartos... that is always my recommendation... less fuss & less upkeep makes for an easy transition.
anyone, regardless of age, can be overwhelmed with the variety of e-cigs and accessories...

take some of your flavors and let him have a go at it. you cant force someone to change a habit, but it always helps to just talk about your experience with it.

same goes for flavors, let him try what you vape... if he doesnt like it, tell him that there are many to choose from and let him pick for himself.
start off with a sample pack from a vendor and just go from there.

If he is computer savy , get him to sign up on ECF and browse the forums.

The only true way to get a person to vape is to let them come to the decision themselves, and it is your job as a more experienced vaper to answer his questions...

Best of luck :vapor:
