Just a quick question... the red cover on one of my batteries is peeling ever so slightly. I'm attaching a picture to make it easier, and all I really want to know is if this makes it any less safe to use. I imagine you don't want the whole thing coming off, but at the moment it's just a nick. It's hardly visible in the photo, just that little black dash near the nipple. (Sorry for the small photo... taken on iphone). Thanks in advance!

All right, I'm not sure why the picture showed up twice... but... there you have it. Apparently it's also not that small if you actually click on the thumbnail. *facepalm*

I've got a pair of 14500s that have started to peel also. If you're using them in a plastic mod where there's absolutely no chance of the exposed area shorting it isn't an issue. If you're using in in a metal mod or there is any way possible the exposed area could touch metal then either replace the battery or if the exposed area can be covered with electrical tape etc it should be ok, just make sure to check it to make sure the tape stays in place. Shrink tubing might be another alternative if you can find the right size but if you're going to that expense just replace the battery. At miinimum I'd wrap it with electrical tape even if it was in a plastic mod just to be on the safe side.

IMO it is not a problem. Since the IMR is an unprotected battery it does not have a protection circuit (usually mounted on top of the flat top +) and the exposed part of your battery is actually part of the negative (the whole casing is). In the picture attached the positive 'starts' just inside the canister and is insulated from the canister (negative) about 2mm from the edge. If you not sure just raid a nail varnish bottle and paint some on.

Actually I think the circuit protection is mounted on the bottom of the battery in protected batteries. The pressure relief valve or "vent" is at the top, or positive end. I may be wrong though. :)

Yes but there a bit more to it than just a vent. The PTCs in the top are fairly sophisticated devices.
