I bought a rebuild-able atty and now I'm ready to buy my own kanthal A1 32 awg and some SS mesh. I've searched the rebuild-able atty forum but a lot of the links in the threads point to sites that are all out of stock. I'll buy at ebay, thats not a problem but I want to make sure I buy the right stuff. From what I've read I want to buy Kanthal 32 A1 awg and some 400/500 SS mesh. What size SS mesh would you recommend? I have two phoenix rebuild-able atty's right now and want to get to tinkering with it. So where can I buy this stuff, in stock, with fast shipping? I'm in the US, California. Thanks guys!

Welcome , but as you said , a lot of vendors seem to be out of stock , most of the time . I usually just buy mine from Ebay , but I buy lots , so I don't run out , for a long time . I use both a 32 and 36 kanthal , and a 400 SS mesh for my Genisis type re-buildables .
Bit if you don't find what your looking for on Ebay , just try Googling SS mesh and Kanthal , and eventually you will find someone , with some stock . Good luck .

Type 304, with it’s chromium-nickel content and low carbon, is the most versatile and widely used of the austenitic stainless steels. Type 304 alloys are all modications of the 18% chromium, 8% nickel austenitic alloy. Applications for this group of alloys are varied and all posess somewhat similar characteristics in resistance to oxidation, corrosion, and durability. All provide ease of fabrication and cleaning, prevention of product contamination and over a variety of finishes and appearances.

Type 316 alloy is a molybdenum bearing stainless steel. It has a greater resistance to chemical attack than the 304 family. Similarly, Type 316 is durable, easy-to-fabricate, clean, weld and finish.

Taken from Type 304 vs. Type 316 Stainless Steel

Are you vaping really thin mostly pg juices? If so go with the 400 ss mesh. For thicker high vg juices your better off with 325 ss mesh. Your not going to have much room in those Phoenix rba's for many coil wraps on the tiny ss mesh wick that will fit in those. I have one set up with a vertical 325 ss mesh wick and kanthal a1 32ga. I was shooting for a 2 to 2.5 ohm coil, but after a few attempts got as high as 1.7 ohms which has been working great for the past 2 weeks. When this one finally pops I'll try 36ga for higher resistance.

E-Bay has kanthal a1 32ga (couldn't find 36ga on E-Bay) here kanthal a1 32ga wire | eBay

For one stop shopping for rba parts try here OKC Vapes - Oklahoma's Premier Supplier of Electronic Cigarettes, E-Liquid, and Accessories!
They have 325 and 400 12" x 12" ss mesh for $10.99
If you like the Phoenix rba check out the Trivecca rba they have. For regular wicks I find these easier to work with. Going to try a horizontal ss mesh wrapped around a cotton wick in mine pretty soon.
For a better ss mesh option they have a DID Clone rbta for a good price. I paid $15 more for the one I got somewhere else and I had to mod it a little because the air hole didn't line up with the wick. Now I'm stalking the mail lady for the pyrex tube I ordered for the tank section, lol.
Hope some of this helps and good luck with your tinkering.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo.../320042-resistance-wire-kanthal-nichrome.html

The below is taken from the first post in the above referenced thread.

There has been a run on the Kanthal A-1 resistance wire that's been for sale on eBay with the surge in rebuildable atomizers. I've done some research into the resistivity and composition of the various Kanthal and Nichrome wires.

Kanthal is an alloy composed mainly of Iron, Chromium and Aluminum. The main difference between the composition of the different grades of Kanthal is the percentage of Aluminum.

Kanthal A-1 has 5.8% Aluminum
Kanthal A has 5.3% Aluminum
Kanthal D has 4.8% Aluminum

All grades have Chromium in the range of 20.5% to 23.5%.

The remaining 70% - 75% is made of Iron.

In my opinion, there should be no (or not very much) difference (in regards to vaping) between the different grades of Kanthal than the slightly different resistances (see the table below).
=====================

Nichrome comes in various compostions. The main components are Nickel and Chromium.

Jacobs Online carries Nichrome 60 (also called Chromel C). This is composed of 60% Nickel, 16% Chromium and 24% Iron.

--------------------------

PnJ Resources carries Nichrome 80. This is composed of 80% Nickel and 20% Chromium

======================

At the temperatures we vape at, there should be no metallic vapors given off by these wires due to heat.
It has been stated by a number of ECF members that Kanthal (A-1) gives a cleaner tasting vape than Nichrome and that Kanthal (A-1) is a stronger more robust wire than Nichrome.
With either material, a thicker wire (smaller awg #) will, most likely, have a longer lifespan than a thinner wire.
=======================

Resistance in Ohms/inch for the Resistance Wires

Kanthal Grade----- A-1 ------ A -------- D ----- Nichrome 60 -------- Nichrome 80

30 awg (Ω/in)----- 0.7 ------ 0.7 ------ 0.7 -------- 0.6 -------- -------- 0.5
31 awg (Ω/in)----- 0.9 ------ 0.9 ------ 0.8
32 awg (Ω/in)----- 1.2 ------ 1.1 ------ 1.1 -------- 0.9 -------- -------- 0.9
33 awg (Ω/in)----- 1.4 ------ 1.4 ------ 1.3
34 awg (Ω/in)----- 1.8 ------ 1.8 ------ 1.7 -------- 1.4 -------- -------- 1.4
35 awg (Ω/in)----- 2.3 ------ 2.2 ------ 2.1
36 awg (Ω/in)----- 2.9 ------ 2.8 ------ 2.7 -------- 2.3 -------- -------- 2.1

Spreadsheet calculations for the resistances

ETA: These ohms/inch numbers are a close average. Due to small variations in wiire thickness, if you cut a one inch piece of wire, the resistance may be +/- 0.1 or so ohms from the numbers in the table above.

Always measure the resistance of a new coil set-up with a multimeter before attaching it to your battery.

Thanks for the heads up on OKC. I do have questions: 1) where did you get the pyrex tank and 2) do you happen to know what wire mesh came with the DID clone?

If I am reading you correctly, to get a higher resistance I want a larger gauge? For some reason I thought it was the other way around, but please, if you could verify I am wrong I would be grateful.

ETA: NEVERMIND on the resistance issue, I see someone posted a lovely chart while I was off checking out OKC! But wherever did you find a pyrex tank and the did mesh question is still up...

It works two ways. The longer the wire, the higher the resistance. The bigger gauge of wire, the lower the resistance. Thus, with a larger gauge, such as 30awg, you can get 9-10 wraps for a 2.1 ohm coil. Where as, 36awg, you can only do about a 3-4 wrap for the same 2.1 ohm. Give or take a few hundreths.

Bigger pipe, more water. Bigger gauge, more electricity freely flowing = lower resistance.

I find, in my opinion, the more wire I can get onto my wick, the better the flavor and vapor production. Thus I stay away from 36 and start working with 32 down to 28 gauges.

Thank you all so much for your help! I mostly vape 70/30 PG/VG, so I'm guessing mostly pg. I only have Phoenix attys right now and plan on going vertical with the ss mesh and coil. So what mesh size do you recommend for my situation? I don't know why kanthal a1 is better or not I just see that most of you are using it so I went with that. I've already taken the silica wick out and used a cotton ball to make a new wick and it wicks way better with no bad flavor. I want to try ss mesh next!
