I already posted this in the Modders/Atomizers sub forum, then thought maybe it would get better exposure here...

I'm trying to think of a good way to trim the metal collar from around the 510 connector on Mega Cylinder (Type B) atomizers, to make them usable on mods with a recessed connector.

I know they can be used with a combination of adapters, but that's
not what I want (tried it, it works, didn't like it).

I've found it easy to do with the Mega Cartomizers, due to their plastic collar. The atty, with its metallic collar is a bit more of a challenge. Maybe a dremel-type tool with a cutting wheel would be a good solution??? I don't own one, but know someone who does. Or would there be another, maybe better way?

Has anyone figured out an easy fix?

I've never tried anything like that. But, looking at my eGo, maybe use a dremel.

Yeah, a guy I work with has agreed to do the surgery for me, with a Dremel with a cutting tool. Looking at the Mega B atty, it has two small air holes opposite each other at the base. I'm thinking that regardless of how carefully the cut is made, there will be sufficient air flow from all around the base ... maybe even too much.

I'm going to hand him a couple unused ones to operate on. Well, I'll test them first to make sure they're not DOA ... no sense in wasting his effort on that. Hopefully, by the end of the week I'll be able to post results.

I was kinda hoping someone would have tried this already and would have their own experience to relate. :)

How about a copper tubing cutter? I have a couple dead ones, I might give it a try tomorrow. If it works, it will be a clean, even cut.
I'd be interested in hearing the results. I'd thought about a pipe cutter, but I have easier access to the Dremel tool.
Someone had posted about using two adapters. A 510 to 901 then a 901 to a 510 again. I haven,t tried it, but it would raise the connection.
I've done that, as I mentioned in Post #1. Not very happy with the results for a couple of reasons. #1, not too cool cosmetically. The combination of adapters was actually too long. And, the adapter in the atomizer is a slight PITA to remove. It works, but since my atomizers last for months I think I'd rather do the surgery. Your mileage may vary.

Ok, tried a tubing cutter today. The results were not good and I don't think it would work if it were cut off with a Dremel either. The barrel part is an outer sheath that slides over an inner core and is press sealed at the bottom. When the pressed end is cut off, the barrel falls off, since there is nothing to hold it in place

I know you said you didn't want an adapter, but this is basically a 510 extender...may work.

eGo charger adapter
I've actually got one of those, purchased from TW. I don't know why, but I don't get any current through it when I try to use it as an adapter. Perhaps it is defective. I haven't tried to use it for charging since I got my USB rapid chargers. But, it's even longer than the "pair of adapters" solution.

In spite of bruther's results (thanks for sharing that, BTW), I'm going to try it with a Dremel-type on an old atomizer. Not much to lose in the experiment. I'm hoping that sooner or later the manufacturer(s) will recognize a market for a modified version of this atomizer type for use with mods. Hey, can't blame a guy for hoping.

The ones I'm going to do the exploratory surgery on were purchased from TW. Perhaps they're not all constructed the same way? Ah well, I'll know in a day or two.

I used my tube cutter to cut up 3 Mega Attys, the dist from the lip to the internal base is .410" I cut one at .375", one at .350" and one at .275" and still could not get one that did not separate the base from the barrel, If I cut any shorter then the threads wouldn't be exposed enough to screw into the mod. I would do another one but I don't want to start testing on my LR attys that still work. ;) I would love to get them to work on my ProVari when I get it. I would like to use my new eGo-T on it too.

Good Luck,
Jeff~

@mauzey: Well, it looks like you went the extra mile attempting this. And it would appear your results are pretty definitive. I figured someone must've attempted this. Glad you found the thread.

Thanks much for the info ... with that in hand, it wouldn't make a lot of sense for me to cut up any of my attys.

RATS!

It would seem we're limited to adapters and hoping for the unlikely event of a manufactured variant which is mod friendly. I'm ready to buy those right now!
