I renewed my supporting membership with paypal on Oct 5th, I'm pretty sure it was not set for automatic renewal.

Everything seemed fine, but today I got an email from paypal that said my payment failed. My subscription runs out today, so I am not asking in the supporting members forum in case I won't be able to see any posts there.

I went to my paypal account, my credit card and bank info is up to date and correct, I don't see any reason for it not to have been paid!

I don't think I had it set to renew automatically, but IF it was and I paid manually before the subscription ran out, maybe it tried to automatically renew on the date my subscription would have run out? I'm hoping that is what happened and since I already paid it the second try failed?

Can someone please check my status? Paypal is a PITA, they won't talk to me on the phone because our account is in my hubby's name and he isn't available to tell them it's okay to speak to me. Thanks very much.

I had been billed twice? And paid twice. Apparently one was auto renew, then I got a bill and paid it. I have a dispute in for the double payment, but have never disputed with paypal before so not even sure I did it right.

I sent a message to the admin here telling them to please only have one payment processed and refund the other. I have no clue what I am doing, and no clue why I was billed if they were going to just auto renew me anyway.

What a mess!

ETA: I didn't even know I could call them, so I did. They are fixing it for me so ECF gets paid as they should, and I get one refunded.

If you hadn't written this, I would never have thought to call them! So thank you for that. Apparently my phone number gelled with their information so it was pretty seamless getting it resolved.

I just hope the admin here at ECF doesn't get confused now, since one is paid and one refunded. I will be a bit upset if my account here is cancelled when they see the refund since I did pay the other one.

I hope you get everything resolved as well.

Sorry ECF admin!

Nope, you fixed it! I'm glad to see my badge is still there, considering that my subscription ran out today. So far, so good on the membership, I hope....

Check Recurring Payments on your PayPal account. That should tell you whether or not you're still set up. ECF is always a recurring payment for membership unless you cancel it manually on your PayPal account.

Hope this helps!

Sonic, I got confused too. My Settings for Paid Subscriptions indicate that
Validity periods marked with a * indicate that this subscription is recurring.
After the initial subscription period is complete, the subscription will automatically be renewed with a new charge.

I checked my settings and there is no asterisk in sight. So I checked my PayPal account and sure enough, my Preapproved Payments to ECF status is Active.

So what's the deal with those asterisks???? I remember they used to be there next to my "validity period" dates but now they are gone...

Start Date
08-04-2013
Expiry Date
08-04-2014

If you look closely when you selected the 1 year subscription, you will see the *

All subscriptions are set to automatic by default but can be cancelled through PayPal. So if you haven't cancelled it, it will charge you automatically.

Just wanted to chime in to mention that I had a similar problem to the OP a while back when my subscription last came due to renew. I got a message from PP that my payment had failed, no reason for it that I could see. I just cancelled the subscription before it could make a second attempt and started a new one, that worked for me and I only got billed once. Was only without my supporting member privileges for a few hours in total

So perhaps there is something bugging out with paypal's recurring billing (on their end)? I've had other paypal subscriptions in the past with no issues, but those were monthly rather than yearly
