Reo Alternative

I am a flavor chaser. Looking for a Reo Alternative $200 (w/atty) is a lot of money to get set up. I looked at the VMOD / XL, and I don’t think the flavor would come close. I am watching the classified, may have to go that route to save a few bucks. Also asking around for a custom bottom feeder mod. Why is there no competition for the Reo, or maybe I just have not found them yet. I just don’t have that kind of money let from my SS check. My wife told me getting old is not for sissies. Any ideas, I would like to stay under $75

If I may recommend placing a post in the WTB classifieds for a REO and BF atty for the price you can pay. Someone may have a older one they would be willing to part with for that price.

Nothing really compares to the REO. It could very well be the last mod you would ever need.

Do you have batteries and a charger? What kind of coil building supplies do you have?

From a financial point of view, save what you can and find a way to afford it. I've spent enough on other mods and atties to have 3 or 4 reos. Now I have no desire to buy other mods and the maintenance on the reo is absolutely cheap as dirt. Coil wire is 10 bucks for 100ft, cotton as we all know is super cheap. All that's left is juice, and you should know what that cost is. Occasional new battery purchase, charger etc. Once you've got it, you've got it.
It's worth every penny.

I can tell you from personal experience the Vmod comes no where close to the flavor and vapor of a Reo and RM2......also I did not have 1 that held up past 2 months period. I bought my first Reo 2 weeks after the Vmod, the Vmod has been LONG gone almost 3 years and the very same Reo is just trucking along and NOTHING has ever broke on it :)

There are other BF box mods out there. Not much compares to a REO in price. I tried the V mod rout...not for me. The other BF are made of wood and quite pricy. I made a wood BF of my own. Is it as nice as a Woodvil or any of the other wood mods out there. No. Did it come out well and looks good. Yes!. Does it work well. Yes!. Give it a shot. I built it way uned $75 and bout everything new to do so. fat daddy makes a nice BF 510 for under $20.

PS.....I will own a woodvil and a grand as some point.

Having "been there, done that" you have to consider a few things about the Vmod:

You can get it on sale for about fifty bucks, but it's only worth about fifty bucks to begin with.

The outer chassis cover is lightweight aluminum. It is easily bent. Whatever you do, don't step on it. (Step on a Reo? No problem.) A replacement outer cover will set you back at least twenty bucks.

The inner chassis is plastic, and it runs kind of thin at certain stress points - so dropped or not they tend to self-destruct with time. (The one I received arrived "pre-cracked" and had to be replaced before I could even use it.) Although you get a one year warranty, you cannot buy a replacement chassis if you want to or need to. They will, however, happily sell you another complete Vmod to fix the problem.

Similar to a Reo, if you dead short a Vmod the battery spring collapses for safety. Unlike a Reo that is not a replaceable part. (See "chassis replacement" above.)

There are certain conditions that can cause the connection from the 510 center post to the battery to create a dead short. It's not exactly a great setup how that connection is made.

It is made for cartos and attys only. A few people have got creative and modded the Vmod to accept a couple of bottom feed attys, but it is not designed "as-is" to use them.

Too many parts in that Tunnel Calamity you have to deal with to mount an atty or carto, including a bizarre o-ring mounted in there to the inner wall of the tunnel that is a half day challenge to get in place. Another thing that arrived not in place on my Vmod.

It does not feed like a Reo. There is this "tip, squeeze & flip" gesture you have to go through to feed it. Makes for interesting public display. It has to be modded to fix that.

Don't even get me started on their customer service.

So you can try it. But is it an alternative to a Reo? In so many fundamental ways - no. If anything, it might convince you that you like the idea of a bottom feeder. But it will also be a $50.00 waste of money that could have been spent toward a Reo to begin with. The response to to trying to sell a Vmod in the classifieds is generally {{{crickets}}}.

From my experience adding up all money buying all different PVs prior to my first REO would accumulate enough to buy you one and 3 or 4 other folks one. I get it...if you don't got the money...you don't got the money. All those PVs weren't bought because I couldn't buy a REO cause in the beginning I didn't know of the REO. I just kept looking for something better than what I had at the time without buying a crazy priced PV. Turns out a loosing battle of performance and cash in the long run. I can't speak of the Vmod since I never owned one but my first BF mods I think were the Wetbox and Mr. Puffer...good luck trying to find one of those dinosaurs. I wish I could be of more help but all I can say the REOs are worth every penny and there are other mods out there carrying a heftier price tag that can't beat the performance or the customer service at the price of Rob's REOs.

jbarrick, I have some Vmod stuff I can PIF to you so that you can save your money for a Reo. I really hate to see you waste your money! The only thing you would need to purchase are batteries, charger, atomizers.....If you are interested PM me :)

There's not really a cheaper alternative to the REO that's not also cheaper in quality. I've never had the vmod but I've read enough about it that it didn't interest me. But if you're unsure if a bottom feeder is right for you then trying one of those might give you an idea of what it's like. However, if you already know you like bottom feeders I would suggest sticking with whatever you're using now & saving up for a REO. Sorry I can't be more helpful than that. As you've pointed out, there's just not much competition for the REO (a few but most that I've seen are more expensive than the REO, not less).
