Do you remember when you first saw an automatic washing machine and spent an hour just watching it? That's a VP1, but the sliders are crap and wear out after a month. Buy something else.

You need to be clear about batteries. Protected batteries are no longer recommended for use in any mods. They are certainly not recommended in mechanical mods, which have no safety features built into them, no little window that says "atty short" etc. I realise "it's protected" sounds safer.

The reason is because the safer chemistry IMR batteries do less damage when they give up. They fizz rather than exploding and that's important in something inches from your face. I look for two things in batteries i buy "IMR" which relates to the chemical composition of it, and "High Drain" which estimates its ability to handle demanding loads.

There are plenty of batteries that tick both boxes, so don't get fobbed off with something else and don't buy a $6 charger!

Is this the right battery? I doesn't say PROTECTED?

I will agree that the sliders are not as smooth as they could be when new but I used 1 drops of 3 in 1 oil on each slider they have been smooth as butter going on 7 months now.

Welcome, Jeff. While the road to Reoville is often long and bumpy it's worth every minute of the journey. You'd be hard pressed to find a better home than this one. Its people are quick to help, kind with their words, and generous beyond comprehension.

Reo Users Manual:

Warnings

USE ONLY PROTECTED OR SAFE-CHEMISTRY RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES
DO NOT USE UNPROTECTED Li-ion BATTERIES
DO NOT USE STANDARD NON-RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES
These APVs are designed to use 510 or 306 atomizers or cartomizers. If you use this with an adapter, you do so at your own risk. Improper adapter setup can cause a short in the mod.

That is where I got it from, I did not know any better. Thank's, now I do.

The key here is "IMR" IMR is NOT Li-ion, they use different chemistry, and so the "safety" is built in, rather than depending on a "protection circuit", which can, and does, fail.

IMR="SAFE-CHEMISTRY"

Err - yes they are! they just use manganese - they are all li-ion batteries.

Incidentally - i started running a Reo when i first got one with a protected battery, the difference is it is longer because the protection circuit sits on it, and it squashes your spring. A lot.

Um, you are correct (and I'm not...again lol), however, you also make a good point about the protected batteries, they are longer and that's another good reason not to use them.

ETA: fixed the first post to be a bit less misleading :)

Just so ya’al know, I am a proud owner and member of ReoVille due to the generosity of RattlerX/Darrell, Karmakatie/Karen and Filthy-Beast/Drew. I will do my best to PIF!

Thanks again ya’al,
Jeff

That's awesome  Truly some of the coolest kindest ppl on ECF  Welcome to the ville

Jeff since you are laying blame for trying to subject you to a vape addiction. We should give a shout out to Jan/JC Okie as well....If good is happening she is always in the middle. :)

Im not an official member of Reovill as I don't have one yet(just like it in here) and it looks like I'm a little late to the party. How ever if you ever need a new charger I have an I4 I can send your way. Just PM me if you need it.

You don't have to own a REO to be here in REOville your more than welcome. :) We have had many visitors without a REO pull up stakes and moved here but of course on the outskirts. JK

Wow! I am impressed that you read the manual! It does definitely say "DO NOT USE UNPROTECTED Li-ion BATTERIES".
Just checked mine and it was written in 2011, it might be time for a revision of the manual, but that might delay the new 510 connectors, mechanical Woodvil run, RM9 and RM10 release, gold plated Woodville positive contacts, patina'd doors, SL Brass Reo's, kicked Grands, and all the other special projects in the RRDD (Reo Research and Development Department) ;) I think this forum has become the manual which is current and up-to-date, revised every day! :)

General advice

DO NOT USE UNPROTECTED RECHARGEABLE LI-ION BATTERIES IN AN APV

Use a safer-chemistry battery such as Li-Mn or hybrid

Note 1: we no longer recommend protected Li-ion (ICR) as an automatic choice.

IMR (Li-Mn) or hybrids are now (2014-03-21) a far better choice for all removable-cell devices of any kind: mechmod APVs, electrically switched APVs, and electronically-regulated APVs (VV and VW).
ICR (protected Li-ion) is now for specific, well-chosen applications and generally means a low current draw of <3A is required.

Note 2: we no longer recommend Li-FePo4 batteries.

They require a special charger, or the switch on a dual-voltage charger to be correctly positioned - which means mistakes will be made.
They are a commonly counterfeited battery, and could be re-covered reject unprotected Li-ion cells instead of Li-FePo4 - it may be impossible to verify the supply chain or what the battery really is. Because these cells are normally used in series, there is a significant elevation of risk with counterfeit cells.
Although they are probably the most stable of all lithium cells, their heyday was back when 2-cell mechmods were popular for 6 volt vaping, and that time has gone. They have few modern applications in vaping.

ONLY USE RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES - DO NOT USE ORDINARY NON-RECHARGEABLE CELLS
(often called 'lithium camera batteries')

Mechmods (mechanical APVs) with RBAs (rebuildable atties) may not work with a protected Li-ion cell because the current demand is too high. A safer-chemistry cell is a better choice.

Our advice is that the best and the safer choice of battery for APVs is the AW IMR Li-Mn rechargeable.

It is a safer-chemistry battery that needs no protection, and has a high-discharge rating meaning that it is safer to use with high-current devices such as atomizers. Here is a good post on battery safety that lists many safer-chemistry batteries and their specifications:
