There are a couple of ways to do dreads, Any knowledge on those? You can do it naturally in which case the hair dreads together and you just need to keep it in same size strands, could do braiding all the way around, or teasing. I looked it up on youtube and I can't figure out which way to go. I think I'd like braids all the way around....

Also, last night, you were explaining about how they would change the speed of music back in the day to please the artist, etc. And everybody played so slow.

One of the videos of that merle haggard performance of "I"m a lonesome fugitive" was a live tv broadcast, as far as I can tell. Would they still do that? Also, was it common to slow down or speed up to one of the 12 keys, pretty much right on? (I'm not counting the enharmonic keys...)

I never had a good reel to reel and have never played with getting the effects from taping back and forth, flanging, pitch change, etc. We have pedals for all that now and digital recording. I love learning how it originally was done.

Thanks, Fleet

The way analog was recorded was straight to a, like, VHS cassette tape and then mastered down to vinyl. Tape had a tendency to stretch or shrink depending on the environment in the studio. That usually accounted for a lot of it. Recording equipment relied heavily on a lot of moving parts. Picture a VHS tape in your VHS player at home. Sometimes it played slow and sometimes it would speed up. The tape usually slowed the speed down and that is why most pre 90's music you play along with is 1/2 step down, ie... E - Eb... Sometimes an engineer would either change the tempo, either up or down, when mastering which changed the key one way or the other... I know our stuff was fast and the engineer slowed it down so it sounded more manageable. Like I said, we played a thousand miles an hour, or so it seemed. Since he knew he was going to slow it down he had us tune to a sharp so it came out a major when mastered. Since things have gone digital it pretty much is mastered at the same speed and tempo it is recorded now. Not really too many moving parts. It is recorded to a hard drive and then burned to a disc... Pretty cut and dried now.

One of the tools I used when I played covers originally was a Pandora multi effects processor and would run a cassette or CD, (when they finally arrived), through the processor and it had a pitch control in the processor that would match it up with whatever key I was tuned to. It was really cool. I used it to learn lead licks. You could slow the original lick down to almost note for note to learn the lick... It took some getting used to but a great aid when you had to learn 5-10 new songs in a week...

Yes, thank you. I use Transcribe!, software that allows you to manipulate the sound file in the ways you mention and maybe more. I've learned some pretty hard solos (for my skill level) but I ain't ready for 5-10 a week. Soon though :)

Thanks again!

Edit: the first song I transcribed the intro and solo to was the Cowboy Junkies cover of "Hard to Explain". That was fun but I did it. So transcription got much easier after that exercise. Here's a link to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAT3De-3LhM

Getting the notes was 1/4 of the battle. Playing it with heart and soul, and getting the timing right, pull offs nice and clean, slides etc..... Took a bit longer.

Huge hugggs for Kay. And hey Fleet. Yeah, I've been taking one style or another since I was around 10. So far I'm holding my own and even improving. Never know when the body will give out though. Huuge huggss for Karen if you see this.

nice to see you Ed! awesome on keeping with it at 50!

back in my younger days, i did a variety of martial arts. for a while i studied under the founder of a Japanese school of karate (can't remember the name). he always used to say as long as you keep your hips flexible, you'll never grow old.

sadly, i didn't follow his advice...

When i first began to play guitar, my father had an old reel to reel tape recorder with variable speeds. That thing was an absolute blast, since you could play something at a reasonable pace and then play it back so you sounded like a Martian with 12 fingers. Mis-spent youth i suppose.

Shout out to Ed! Good to see you! i don't even do full-contact origami these days.

Okay ladies, I really need your help.

I've decided it's time for a change regarding hair. I've talked about this before but I'm getting serious now. I'm thinking of:

1. Getting an inch of my hair cut off, just to straighten it at the bottom. Been years since I've had a haircut. (My hair is over halfway to my belt to I've some room to work.
2. about an 1 1/2 inches above the bottom of my hair get a 2" bleach job. Below that I'll still have 1 1/2 inches of brown hair.
3. Take those 1 1/2 inches and get it dyed purple. Not bright, but noticeable.
4. Trim my beard (been a couple of years for that as well.) Should I leave it the color it is which is black, blonde, brown and grey, or dye it.

Or: dreadlocks.

I'm open for suggestions. Many of you will probably laugh. Well, if I can make you laugh today I've done a good thing :)

Fleet...baring in mind that I'm an oldbroad...and you asked for it:D i might have some suggestions.

But NO dreadlocks :)

A pic of you from the side and back would be helpful.Personally, I like the color of your hair and your beard, but if you wanna look younger, maybe dye your beard just a little, like those comb-in dyes. Your hair, beard and hat make you very distinctive tho.

if you wanna attract the younger ones, go all out:)

Hi Kay,

I'll see what I can do on pics. I used to dye my beard the color of my hair. Took ten years off my looks instantly. But my beard has such a mix of colors I kind of hate to hide that.

As far as younger ones..... Nope, not for me. I want someone who's been through their stuff, learned a bit about life, and aren't wanting me to go skiing everywhere as that would be a death sentence for me :)

I'll keep you posted on the pics. Hey, if we get this webcam thing going, you can just see me and I'll rotate my head. Like in the exorcist. :)

I'd just settle for a trim to neaten it up a bit. Same for the beard.

I'm by nature very lazy and also bald, so the upkeep of dyeing hair every few weeks would brown me off.

You could of course go for a nice mullet like Andre Agassi. I think dreads make people look scruffy and homeless

Kay, I bought my daughter in AZ a web cam. We did a video chat right from Facebook. For more than one person Google Hangouts works great! If you have a google account you are all set. You can do a video chat with lots of friends. I have used Hangouts to chat with Dennis one time and Lisa one time. It would be fun to have a Reonaut video hangout!

this will be clothing optional like last time-- right Karen?

Well, I've been scruffy and homeless. Didn't mind my looks at the time though :) (I did take showers everyday :) )

Glad you're onto something new and have given up on shaving me hairless :)

i have no recollection of wanting to shave you, Fleet

then again, the unfortunate giraffe incident of 2013, as well as the reason behind all the restraining orders is also kinda blurry...

Well, I accept your claim of amnesia. Just don't let me remember it again :)
