REO VS KAJI a Comparison of two great mods
I have been vaping for nearly a year and have made the normal progression through many different devices. I started with the Smoking Everywhere RN4081 then to the 510 tried the 901 got the EGO and for about five months used the EGO 510 configuration. I then discovered LR510 atomizers and found that on the EGO they were a definite step forward. Throughout this process the biggest PITA was the filling and playing with the carts. I tried just about every cart mod (i.e. PTB, Fluval, Polyfill, Blue Foam, ZFM, BFD yada, yada, yada) with only partial success. Each had their benefits and drawbacks and I credit the many inventive people on this forum for their contributions. I then decided that for me the way to go was with a juice feeding mod. After a great deal of research and an abortive attempt with the Mr. Puffer (still carts and fill material) I decided on the REO. This with a great deal of support and encouragement from AMAGN whose reviews, comments and PMs with me were invaluable. I was also looking and the KAJI at the same time but there was a lot less information available so I went with the REO.
When I received the REO I was immediately impressed with its appearance, construction, performance and ease of use. I still had my eye on the KAJI and again with the aid of another fine ECF member, Pete54 , I decided I should have both and purchased the KAJI. When I received the KAJI I was again impressed so I thought I would do a side by side comparison and share my opinions with the forum. Understand that this is my first (and probably last) review and I dont claim to have the expertise and experience of people like Amajn, Clyde2801, What a Clumsy Girl or any other reviewer. It is just my humble opinion for whatever it is worth.
I purchased both of these MODS and have no affiliation with either supplier and have not received any consideration for this review. The comparison was done using the same atomizers and liquids.
Ive decided to rate these mods in five categories that I feel are important:
1. Appearance These are box mods and they should be judged as such. They are not sleek or sexy nor do they look at all like a cigarette but not all boxes are created equal.
2. Construction
3. Juice Feeding System
4. Functionality
5. Customer Service
I am assigning a maximum of twenty points to each category
Appearance
REO - The REO is an example of wood crafting at its best. The color, grain, finish and design reminds me of a fine piece of furniture. The way the door is situated give a panel effect and the REO logo on the front of the box add to its overall appearance and IMO gives it more character that just a box.
On a scale of 1-20 I give the REO a 19 for appearance.
KAJI - The KAJI is also a magnificently made wood box. Again, the color, grain and finish are really superb. However, because of the way the door is made. It is the entire side of the front which gives it more of a just plain box look.
On a scale of 1-20 I give the KAJI a 17 for appearance.
Construction
REO The REO is a solid block of wood that has been hollowed out to provide a compartment to house the battery, electrical components, juice bottle and juice feeding connections. The door is a thin piece of wood which slides up and down along channels that run along the side of the hollowed out compartment. There are two magnets on the top of the door and the top of the box to keep the door in place. The electrical wiring runs along grooves on the inside of the box and is well hidden and in no way interfere with changing the bottle of liquid or battery. The REO is 3-7/8 high 2-1/4 wide and 1-1/8 deep. Add about 5/8 to the height for the brass reservoir. Therefore, it is quite large and because it is a solid piece of wood it is also quite heavy. It is magnificently put together and looks like it will survive a great deal of abuse.
On a scale of 1-20 I give the REO an 18 for construction.
KAJI The back and sides of the Kaji are one piece the door another and the top and bottom pieces can be of the same wood or different type to change the appearance. The door is the entire front of the box and is held in place ingeniously by the use of magnets on the back of the box and on the door. When I first received the box the door was very loose and I was skeptical as to whether or not it would stay in place. However, once the battery is put in the door actually snaps into place and is very secure. Inside the box the electrical connectivity is accomplished through the use of metal rails that run along the top and side of the unit. It is incredibly clean inside without wires to worry about ripping out or interfering with the juice bottle or battery. The KAJI measures 3-1/2 high 1-5/8 wide and 1-1/8 deep. The sides, back top and bottom pieces are a bit thinner than the REO and this coupled with its smaller size make it a great deal lighter. Its not quite a solid as the REO but it is quite sturdy.
On a scale of 1-20 I give the KAJI 18 for construction.
Juice Feeding System
REO This is a bottom feed system with a 6ML bottle. The bottle is screwed into a cap that is affixed to the top of the inside of the box and has a long tube that reaches to the bottom of the bottle. Changing and refilling the bottle is a breeze. Just lift the bottom of the bottle out, unscrew from the cap and pull all the way out. Refill and just screw it back into the cap. The juice is fed to the atomizer by pressing a plunger that goes through a hole in the sliding door. I dont pretend to know exactly how this is accomplished and frankly I really dont care. Suffice it to say that it just works and works very well. The atomizer connection is a native 801 and there are adapters supplied with the mod for the 510 and 901.
I have never been a fan of the 801 (too hard a draw and too easily flooded for my taste) and I have not used it enough to comment on how well it works with the REO. The 510 and the 901 are a different matter. The REO excels at feeding both of these atomizers. With the 510 just depress the plunger and hold for a second of two until you see juice through the vent holes of the adapter and you are done. Any excess juice is sucked back down when you release the plunger. If the plunger is held too long it will flood the atomizer but a few vapes will quickly get rid of the excess. With the 901 hold the plunger until a droplet appears on the side of the atomizer. Any excess will run down the side of the atomizer into the brass reservoir. One caveat the juice will accumulate in the reservoir and if you turn the REO upside down or at an angle it will run out. You can flood an atomizer with the REO but the learning curve is very short and it soon becomes almost intuitive.
In my scale 20 would be perfect and therefore is reserved for a mod that does not yet exist. But the REO comes real close so I will give it a 17.
KAJI The KAJI employs a similar bottom feeding system with a 3ML bottle. There is a Teflon tube that runs from the bottle through the cap to a silicone tube at the top of the box. The bottle and cap slide along the Teflon tube and changing the liquid requires a little more manual dexterity. In the end it is still a very easy process. Juice is fed by pushing the plunger on the door that presses the bottle driving the liquid up the tube to the atomizer. There is a copper feeding tube that runs through the atomizer connector into the atomizer. In fact the adapters for the 801 and 901 also have this copper tube. Again, as with the REO I dont pretend to know all the mechanics as to how it works but it just does. I think the KAJI shines on the 510. When you see the liquid in the vent holes it is fed and youre ready to go. Very seldom is there any flooding using the 510. With the 901 when you see the droplet at the air intake hole on the atomizer the liquid runs down and because there isnt any reservoir runs over the box itself. Therefore, you do have to be careful or youll get juice all over you. Again the learning curve is very short and feeding the atomizer becomes almost intuitive
On a scale of 1-20 I give the KAJI an 18.
Functionality
REO - The most important aspect of any mod is how it works in day to day usage and meets the requirements of the user. When it comes to vaping it has increased my vaping pleasure tenfold. With the juice being fed directly to the atomizer and not employing any filler material the vapor is richer and far tastier. The 6ML bottle is about right for me and I can go the entire day without changing anything In fact I cannot see myself using carts ever again. There is however a compromise that has to be made. For 50 years I carried cigarettes and a lighter in my breast shirt pocket. I fact I would not buy a shirt if it did not have a pocket. The REO fits in the pocket but in truth it is too heavy to be carried around comfortably. So traveling around with the REO is a bit of a chore for me. For a woman placing the REO in a purse would be no problem. I stated above that the door on the REO enhanced its beauty for me. However, this also creates for me a small design flaw. I live in Florida where there are two environments. Outdoors it is hot and humid and indoors, with air conditioning, it is cool and dry. The other day I had occasion to be outside with the REO for about ten hours. When I got home and tried to remove the battery the door literally would not move. The wood had swollen in the hot humid environment to the point that I had to use tools to get it open. I know that the sides of the door can be sanded down to make a loose fit but in air conditioning it is already loose enough. All in all the REO is a fantastic MOD that delivers on the promise of almost hassle free vaping.
On a scale of 1-20 I give the REO a 17.
KAJI The KAJI also gives an almost hassle free daily vaping experience. It is lighter and smaller that the REO and therefore more portable. The design of the door makes it just a little more functional. Because it uses a 3ML bottle I do have to carry another bottle around with me a very small concession. Again, a fantastic mod that has greatly enhanced my enjoyment of vaping.
On a scale of 1-20 I give the KAJI a 19.
Customer Service I will keep both the REO and the KAJI together in this aspect of my evaluation. Never before have I received the level of attention that I have received from Robert of REO and Ryan from R&R. They answer all inquiries quickly and in a way that makes you comfortable and confident that they are trying to help in the best way possible. Both, have gone out of their way to make sure I am satisfied with their product and have offered insights on how to improve the overall vaping experience.
On a scale of 1-20 I give both a 20
The Total Score
REO 91
KAJI - 92
Conclusion
Obviously on a scale of 1-100 a difference of 1 point is hardly definitive. They both have many virtues and anything negative is indeed very small. I did this review because I was excited about these mods and wished to share this with the forum. I highly endorse both products and will never go back to a non juice feeding personal vaporizer.
Footnote: Like Clyde2801 my wife has appropriated my KAJI. Oh well, Im very happy with my REO
