Protecting Public Health Through Safe and Effective TreatmentsBy Dr. Lawrence R. Deyton, M.S.P.H, M.D., Director of the Center for tobacco Products at the FDA.
Thank you for signing the petition "Recognize electronic cigarettes as an effective alternative to smoking and support job creation in this new industry."

E-cigarettes may contain ingredients that are known to be toxic to humans or otherwise harm public health -- for example, if they are attractive to young people and lead kids to try other tobacco products, including conventional cigarettes, which are known to cause disease and lead to premature death. Because clinical studies of these products have not been submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), consumers currently have no way of knowing what types or concentrations of potentially harmful chemicals are found in these products, or how much nicotine people inhale when they use these products.

FDA is taking steps, as authorized by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, to include electronic cigarettes under the agency's regulatory authority.

However, in light of the lack of validated scientific data, including a lack of reliable indicators of nicotine and harmful chemical content, FDA cannot at this time conclude that electronic cigarettes are an effective alternative to smoking.

Make no mistake, the Obama Administration shares your concern about the public health risks associated with cigarette smoking and is committed to helping Americans quit. Cigarette smoking poses a serious public health risk to our Nation, accounting for about one-third of all cancers, including 90 percent of lung cancer cases. On average, adults who smoke die 14 years earlier than nonsmokers. Nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work increase their risk of developing heart disease by 25 to 30 percent and lung cancer by 20 to 30 percent. A 35-year-old man who quits smoking will, on average, increase his life expectancy by 5 years.

As someone who is clearly engaged on this issue, we also want to make sure you know about the Great American Smokeout, the American Cancer Society's nationwide campaign to encourage smokers to make a plan to quit. Watch a special video from President Obama and learn more about it here:

It's not in their best interests to do so. Politicians need money to get elected so they cater to those that can contribute the most to their campaigns and fund-raisers. The American Cancer Society and the Heart and Lung Association survive on grants from the government which is run by politicians that have to cater to big money in order to get elected. Our government no longer represents "We the people", it represents deep-pocket lobbyists and Political Action Committees. The organizations originally set up to protect the public are now as corrupt as the government since they rely on a corrupted government for grant money.

It's a vicious cycle, and I feel completely helpless to do anything about it.

Was that reply from the FDA in the form of a personal e-mail from Deyton? And if so, what was the date.

And was the subject line of the e-mail "Protecting Public Health Through Safe and Effective Treatments"?

Also, was it sent to you because you signed that petition?

I've sent Deyton many dozens of e-mails, but have yet to receive a reply.

Please explain the details, as this could be very important.

It was a personal email from The White House. Mine was sent at 11:27 am today (12/15/11). The subject line is:

Petition Response: Protecting Public Health Through Safe and Effective Treatments

It includes a video of President Obama's Great American Smokeout message and the following links for further info:

Yes, nothing more than an auto-response form letter which essentially boils down to "thanks for giving us your opinion, now buzz off while we do whatever the h*** we want."

I really wish that there was a good place for "young people" that are so often mentioned to give their opinions - I know that my daughter and her group of friends have alot to say about this.

What happened was the White House gave the petition to the FDA - the people who the petition was basically against.

Petitions are useful but action is what counts. Join CASAA, donate to CASAA, keep an eye out for what you can do to help CASAA in your area. Local action is better than trying to talk to people who have already been bought had pressure applied to them.

I'm pretty sure it's just the same form letter we all got from signing the petition. I can't imagine any of these people paying attention to me directly, but here the info:

Yep, I got it too. What a bunch of overpaid, don't do gooders. Like they are really watching out for our health and well-being. If that's the case, then why is tobacco readily available?...DON'T answer that I already know. I'm just being a sarcastic ...... who is more than a little steamed at the letter.
