Could someone really briefly explain resistance to me?

I am ordering more Boge cartomizers for use in my Riva 510 and with a new Joye 510. Ideally, I'd like it to be used in both devices, but heard the low resistance can't be used with the 510, only with the Riva.

What is the benefit to low resistance atomizers and cartomizers and what is the trade off?

Thanks!

The basic equation for how much power you get is voltage x voltage / resistance.

At a given voltage, lower resistance means more power, warmth, vapor. Too much power = burned/harsh.

The downside to lower resistance is current draw. Current = voltage / resistance. Higher current means you drain the battery faster (shorter run time between recharging), and both the battery and surrounding electronics (including the switch) have limits as to how much current they can handle, so you may get a premature failure if you use really low resistance.

On a Riva 510 I used 2 ohm cartomizers. I know others use lower resistance devices, just I didn't. On a stock 510 battery (the little ones, rated at 180 or 280 mAh current capacity), you really should stick to higher resistance because the battery is too small to drive a lot of current.

LR stuff can only be used with batts with more than 450mah of power...to use them with your J-510(180-280mah) would quickly kill the batt and may even trip the protection circuits...they will work with your Rivas, I am using 2.0Boges and 1.7 Resurrectors(which really rock) on my Rivas...the trade off is about an hour less effective use of the Rivas...for me, that means 6-7hrs Vs 7-8hrs...and yes, I consider it worthwhile for the added vapor/flavor production...LR allows you to mimic using high voltage mods with a 3.7batt...anything below 2.4ohm would be considered as a LR...from 2.5 to 3.0 would considered SR(standard resistance) and anything above would be considered as high for use on high voltage mods(5-7.4v)

In a nutshell, lower resistance means higher current draw which means a hotter vape. Your batteries drain their charge faster.

Tobacco flavored juices benefit more from LR and fruity, sweet juices like standard resistance. You just have to try both high and low with your juices and decide which goes better with which.

Another consideration is battery voltage. Riva batts start at 3.7v when fully charged and Ego batts are regulated at 3.4v. There's a slightly hotter vape on a Riva, but that changes as the Riva loses some voltage in the drain cycle. Either atty will be slightly hotter at 3.7v.

Simplified - the lower a resistance (ohms) is vs the amount of voltage, the hotter something will run and the faster it will draw power out of the battery. So with a theoretical 3.7v battery - a 3.7ohm atty (or carto) would be cold and maybe non-functional. A 3.2 ohm atty would be slightly warm, a 2.5 ohm atty would be decently warm bordering on hot. A 2.2 ohm atty or 2 ohm atty (LR) would be hotter. A 1.7 ohm atty would be very hot.

Exception - if something has more than one coil then it can draw a lot of power but not run as hot. Dual 3.0 ohm coils would draw too much power for a slim battery because they would draw as much as a LR 1.5ohm coil.

Slim ecigs are not supposed to use the low resistance stuff. Low resistance sucks power out of the battery faster and the electronics in the slim batteries are generally not built to deal with that kind of current flow. You could damage the slim batteries.

I usually tell people to stick to 2.5 to 3 ohm stuff on slim ecigs.

So you could use the 3 ohm Boges on the slim 510 or if you want a hotter vape w/ shorter battery charge life you could use the 2.5 ones if you can find any.

The Riva and all ecigs 450mah+ can use LR (though some people will only use extreme LR on mods). So Riva can use 3, 2.5, or the hotter LR 2.0 ohm Boges.

It's hard to find the 2.5's and plus I want the better battery life from my slim 510's and I like to move my cartos between slim manual 510 and Riva (my Riva is the new 3.7v kind from Liberty-Flights) so I use the 3 ohm ones. They are only slightly warm on 510 and are warmer and give a bigger drag on Riva. I also use the 3 ohm ones my a socalled Ego VV (clone) 3-stage battery at 3.7 and 4.2v (I heard the 4.2 is closer to 3.9). I have some 2.0 Boges but if I use them on Riva I mark them with a gold paint pen first so I don't accidentally put them on the slim 510.
