I bought an Egar a few weeks ago. It died a few days ago. I smoked it lightly, cutting back from about 25 smokes / day to 20 smokes / day most days.

I bought it from Benefits of Egar, who appears to be an air conditioner salesman (Optical Pty Ltd Split and Ducted system Heating and Cooling - based on domain registration details I'm 70% sure). The other options in Australia are eBay Australia Shop - Electronic e Cigarette Australia: quit smoking, alternative, electronic cigarette, who otherwise do shop fittings - Star Commercial Interiors - based on domain registration ownership I'm 90% sure. And The Original Electronic Cigarette. This one's bizarre - they seem to clean people's air using ozone: CleanseAir Inc. - How it works - based on the fact that most of the site is hosted at cleansair (50% sure). They don't exactly reveal this information in an About Us page.

The advertising revolves around the "fact" that you can " BEAT the smoking ban !!" and "Smoke Legally in Restaurants and Bars." There are videos of Australians re-enacting Gamucci ads. I bought it because I wanted to try to stop killing myself with Benson and Hedges.

The "egar" (I don't know what model it actually is) comes with two batteries and an atomizer, charger and three cartridges, only one of which is "Strong". I also bought 30 cartridges. It comes in a box with a picture of a man who appears to be blowing bubbles out of a stick, and is marked "Mini Electronic Cigarette". A piece of paper was glued over him that read "Egar".

According to the Egar site, "The Electronic Cigarette has been extensively tested, the cartridges have been toxicologically approved and producted in a laboratory which is EC [sic] certified." I'm not sure where the "laboratory" hehehe gets its "EC" certification from, or who has done the "extensive testing" on what they have "producted". The box did have *CE* and ROHS printed on it, but I would not be surprised if he purchased the boxes separately.

He bangs on about the "4000 chemicals in tobacco", as though e-cigarettes are organically grown fruit, but that's par for the course.

Pros:
- based in Australia, so shipping only took a few days.

Cons:
- vapour production is poor, (but please note I don't have anything to compare it to but 16mg tar death sticks with the "Special Filter" that ensures no air gets into the smog);
- one of the batteries started smoking while I was using it. I didn't like the taste of the vapour afterwards, so discarded it (after ripping it to pieces to see what was inside);
- batteries were rubbish out of the box anyway - he claims "one day", but I suspect this refers to their self-discharge rate. I found it was less than an hour when new;
- atomizer lasted about two weeks (you only get one). I think a connection came loose;
- Effectively no warranty ("older than 7 or 14 days - not clear which": voided warranty, "we believe it has been used heavily": voided warranty, etc);
- cartridges taste like crap, but so do cigarettes;
- no spare parts are available.

He claims "1 cartridge = 1 pack of 20 cigarettes." In my experience, it lasted for about two to three cigarettes until it wasn't worth smoking.

In Australia, a pack of 25 smokes costs around $13, so over a month on a pack a day you should expect to pay about $390.

According to his numbers:
Cartridges are cheapest if you buy them in packs of 30 ($80). Once you've bought your starter kit, a month should work out at $100.

According to my numbers:
You need to buy a new starter kit twice a month - actually more, as I only smoked it lightly - if you actually wanted to use it heavily you would probably need about four in rotation. (2 x 75 = $150). You would need around 250 cartridges a month ($660), so your monthly spend would be around $800.

I started eking the cartridges out with Johnson's creek, which tasted a lot better. I don't think this had anything to do with the atomizer breaking, though. Ohmmeter reading said broken connection; it didn't just get clogged.

I won't buy from egar.com.au again. I will buy (have bought) from Trog. But ymmv.

as far as i'm concerned these so called "australian sellers" are just some joe blow trying to make a bit of extra cash on the side, claiming they have been in the quit smoking industry for years and that they're super mini's are god's gift to smokers. well we all know that is bull. guys if you're reading, because you work with air conditioning/heating, does not mean you know all about smoking and e-cigs for that matter. where the hell is a good seller who will sell what we want! not these little toys that you can impress your friends with. "look it makes smoke" "wow". they need to spend more time cleaning air conditioners, and less time making out they will clean our lungs with their cheap nasty e-cigs. if they have been in the quit smoking/e-cig industry for years, they would know that the 901 mini, or penstyle is by far the best way to go. what is the bet these guys aren't even smokers, so they take a drag on these super mini toys and start choking. get real would ya.
Bertrand great review, you have basically summed up how bad the e-cig experience is in australia unless you import (which can be costly with the aussie dollar being worth a grain of rice, and time consuming having to wait for things). i have not checked the egar site lately, but i recall them originally selling cartridges for $5 each!!! thats like $5 every 3 cigs and that is just outrageous. as for your theories about them being shop fitters, air con cleaners, etc you are most likely right as i purchased from one of the mentioned, and when i met them to pick the e-cig up, they were at a location where they were doing their job. i will not state who it was as i don't feel it's fair to point fingers, but your 50-90% sure of them doing these jobs is more like 100% sure from proof. i can say i won't be buying anything from australia till there is a decent seller that doesnt have these outrageous prices. it's cheaper for me and my mrs to smoke normal cigs at the moment as it's just too bloody expensive for e-cigs (but that's not stopping us as we are hopefully getting a few extra years out of it). but once again nice review, hopefully aussies will read it before making any purchases. take care guys sorry for the long message.:evil:

Man, I wish this review was here when I first came accross this forum and found pretty much nothing on the egar.

I went ahead and bought one about two weeks ago. Was happy with it for a while, but now I'm just not getting as much vapour as I was a week ago. I also often get little droplets of liquid in my mouth. I was also disappointed with the false claims of 1 cart = 1 pack. I'm not a heavy smoker; I previously smoked about 2-3 packs in a week, so I was hoping the carts would last me at least two months. No such luck, two weeks later and I'm down to squeezing liquid from old carts out of a syringe while I wait for my liquids from puresmoker to arrive. I even went so far as to buy a pack of cigarettes for the first time I got my egar.

I have noticed that I've been getting better vapour from dripping, but think I'm going to have to upgrade to something better if the egar keeps degrading at this rate.

Like you, though, I was impressed at how quickly my egar arrived. Ordered on the Friday, received on the Monday.

Ok, to be fair, I wrote all that when my battery was low and my cart nearly empty. I was quite frustrated and edgy due to nicotine withdrawal.

Having now put in a fresh battery and squeezed the juice out of my last remaining carts, with a little dripping I'm getting a lot of vapour, and god it's good.

That said, the battery and cart lives are still very disappointing. I get a few cigarettes worth of decent vapour, then as the battery starts to run out, the quantity and quality of the vapour drastically decline. Which results in me frantically puffing away and using up the cart with unsatisfactory draws.

When my liquids arrive, I'll probably switch permanently to dripping. With that and a little more diligence with battery usage, I may just be able to make this thing work. If not, I'll still be on the market for a replacement.

Over a month since I started using it now. I've been dripping for about two weeks, and the atomiser STILL hasn't died. I've been rinsing it out in hot water once every two days, and blow through the battery end regularly.

It's just the battery life now that is getting me down. I get maybe 6-7 good dripping smokes' worth before the vapour levels die down, then find myself sucking on it constantly until the led warns me that the battery needs charging. This can take quite a while. I'd say about 40% of a battery's charge produces satisfactory vapour.

By the way, Bertrand, did you get the customer survey that the egar guy sent out?

I received my pathetic two complimentary carts yesterday. It looked as though the envelope got caught up in the sorting machines or something. The envelope was torn (resealed in an Australia Post thing), and one of the carts was crushed.

Yeah. Got the marketing research thing. Didn't respond, though. Hehehe "$10 worth of cartridges" = 2 cartridges. My Egar atomizer died through a broken connection - which happens pretty randomly to any of them afaik. I was also bypassing the cutoff so I could get some kind of decent nicotine does from it by taking three or four inhalations of below the four second cutoff at a time - this may have been what killed it.

It's possible he only gave me two carts because I was extremely critical of Egar and the false advertising in my comments. It's also possible that some fell out of the envelope when it got snagged.

I do the same thing to bypass the cutoff. I also cover the holes when I start the drag, so the thing gets pretty damn hot sometimes. I do worry sometimes that I'm abusing the atomiser, which is why I clean it out regularly. I guess I've just been extremely lucky.

Hello,

I am calling for an update on Egar please. Mostly... Just Because I love the name of this device.

I was hoping on an Update Bertrand or other reputable member on The Egar if you will... Things like:
Have you continued use of it,
How is it fairing,
Have you implemented new behaviors with or "tips" if you will, with it,
Have you kept in contact with customer service. Etc. etc. etc.
