Rewicked Protank coils with cotton, not getting much flavor

I started vaping with a couple Evods and a Mini PT2. The Evods worked well except they'd randomly leak badly, and the PT2 wouldn't wick 50/50 liquids very well. Flavor wasn't that great compared to Aspire BVC coils either. I keep reading about how rewicking with cotton solves those issues and gives much better flavor, so I got out my Mini PT2 and some leftover coils. Followed these instructions Stop throwing away your protank coils – ITCVapes couldn't find organic cotton anywhere so used "100% pure cotton" balls from Walmart. I'm getting big dense clouds, can run the coils at higher wattages, and no wicking issues or leaking. However I've tried a few different juices and they ranged from almost no flavor to about the same as the stock wicks. Any ideas why I'm not getting the great flavor I keep hearing about?

Maybe not enough wick... I know in my RDAs if I don't use enough wick it will boil the liquid which doesn't taste great... Try firing a freshly rewicked coil after wetting the cotton with ejuice. If it's boiling off the coil you need more wick. You'll know you have too much cotton if you start getting dry hits, it's a delicate balance.

I think the pt2 has better airflow than the evod (less resistance) so you may need to suck harder to get the negative pressure required to feed juice.

It's been over a year since I messed with any of this (stock coils) so hopefully someone with more recent experience can fix your vape!

The idea of "flavor" is very subjective. I'm fairly new to rebuilding my own and the big thing I did notice about my rebuilds wicked with cotton was a "cleaner" and cooler taste, compared to stock coils, and yes, I'd also say better and more flavor, but it's not a mind blowing difference. It's subtle in my experience, but still worth the effort for the taste and the savings.

The tutorial I've followed has been this one, especially about how much cotton and how to tell if there's too much cotton.
( "just enough to when the coil grips enough of the cotton the coil will want to shift, is about perfect and the most you need" )

I've never rewicked a stock coil, so I'm not much help there. If you've built coils in other devices, or are interested in trying, microcoils work very well in these. Tight space to work with, but still not that hard. Rip has a good video. Prefer mine at 1/16" with 10-12 wraps. Big improvement over Kanger's single or dual coils. More vapor, more flavor.

I'm not convinced that cotton in itself has a better flavor than silica (some folks will disagree). It certainly wicks faster, allowing higher power, more juice to be vaporized, and thus more flavor. I switched to cotton after silica could no longer keep up with the power levels I wanted, and to try out microcoils (a pain with silica).
