Sorry about that. Here is my setup, 1.3 ohm.

The build appears to be spot on in terms of replicating his build, but there's more to consider. I don't recall him stating what his PG/VG ratio was, and given he's not a fan of big-time throat hit, he's most likely vaping higher VG than PG.

That beign said, many vape reviewers, including Phil Busardo and Grimm Green (Nick) have stated that the vapor that you see on camera isn't really as much as you'd think unless it's from an atty or device that is specifically setup to produce clouds (i.e. a wide open air hole). Much like how the camera "adds weight", or so they say, camera and lighting will affect what you see.

So with all that in mind, what PG/VG ratio are you using? Higher PG typically yields less vapor while higher VG yields more vapor. The kayfun does have a pretty tight draw on it and there's no wide open setting, so the majority of the bigger clouds are also coming from straight up lung inhales instead of mouth to lung.

Sorry, but I just can't watch his videos… Anyways, I built this type of coil in my kayfun a while back, and what I found was the same as you. Initially. Great flavor, and little to no vapor - w/ 100% VG. It acted flooded. Turns out, I had to play with how much wick was around the coil itself, and how dense the wick was. To much and it tended to be choked off/flooded. To little, and it would burn through the liquid to fast… Also coil placement above the air hole is somewhat critical. You need to play with the wick IMO. Good luck.

Messing with setups in a Kayfun is not "fun" for me. In a dripper or genisis it is. Though I have played around with several different coil placements, I usually just settle for a standard micro coil style, 28g, 2mm ID, with silica, ecowool, or mesh depending on what it is going into, because I can pull old wick, dry burn coil, and slide new wick in.

I agree, you will need to fiddle with the wick to get that just right amount.
As always with cotton - less is more.
I did about the same setup as you and the results were hit and miss. If left sitting, I'd get 1-2 really nice draws, but then it would start to drop off. I vaped off about 1/3rd and popped the top off. Cotton had swollen and took all the room under and around the wick.

Seems this setup needs minimal wick around the coil, but enough tail to prevent flooding at the lower deck.

I agree with Jolly Rogers...One of the things I enjoy is building my Kayfuns. One of the things I hate is having to mess with them once filled up with juice. I love tinkering and trying different builds but with a kayfun it's too messy for me. The performance I get from a regular 1.2 ohm micro coil with a cotton wick are about as close to my definition of a "perfect vape" as I've been able to get. I build it and don't need to mess with it until I need to rewick. Thats usually every 3 tanks or so.

I had the same results as you when I tried this build. The wick is the answer...it's such a balancing act that I went back to standard micro coil builds. I had to try it but I don't see myself doing it again. I finally got it working good but as the vapor production went up, it seemed the flavor went down. I guess it was fun though.

I have not tried the vertical coil in my Kayfun Lite yet. I have only been doing the horizontal coils. I just got another Kayfun Lite and I think the first build in it will be the vertical coil.
I have seen others who built this vertical coil setup in Kayfun Lites who said to let the bottom of the vertical coil set directly on the deck and to not raise it as Rip says. I do not think letting the coil set on the deck would cause a short as the deck where the air flow hole is located is the positive post and the bottom leg of the coil attaches to the positive post.
If this is true and can be done it could prevent a potential problem. With the coil raised, the wick could be swelling up to the point that when it swells it could move under the coil and block the air flow. With the coil setting on the deck this could not happen.

Complete opposite results here. I did tinker with Rip's setup by using a slightly smaller diameter wrap, @ 1.0 ohm. My air is as open as the KFL+ will allow (air adjustment screw completely removed). As u said flavor is great, only I am getting better vapor production then the standard micro coil cotton build. I also did the same build in a Fogger V2 with outstanding results. I am using Bounty Hunter as a juice.

Update:

So it came time to rebuild the KFL and since this setup was working so well I tried again. on this build I had results similar to the OP.

I took it apart to inspect what was causing the issue. In my case it was the Airflow. I noticed the coil was a bit to high off the deck, allowing the cotton to very slightly sit in between the bottom of the coil and the air hole on the deck. This caused a restricted airflow and much less vapor. Also made the TH a bit harsh, but the flavor was still great. Once I opened it up adjusted that space to as little as possible, re wicked making sure no cotton got under the coil, BAM!!! clouds of flavor!

Once setup correctly it is an amazing build. I must have just gotten lucky the first few times I set it up, but now I can see how easy it is to completely change the results with a slight space and some stray cotton.

This has been my setup for quite some time on the Russian. As long as the coil is just off the deck (I'm talking barely) there are really no flooding issues. It also takes a bit of fine tuning to get the right amount of cotton but it's worth not giving up on after the first try. I personally found that this setup requires less airflow and have actually tightened the draw on the Russian so the adjustment screw is halfway in. Any of my drippers or gennies have the holes opened up. It may not be the ultimate in cloud machines, but the flavor is outstanding and it is a good, satisfying vape for me.
Currently 29g at 1.4 ohm:

Edit: I'm not even sure if this is the same setup Rip is running- Can't watch his videos, but sounds similar.

As an aside, I was always impressed with the clouds that Phil and Green produced on gear I HAD, and didn't think I was getting nearly that kind of performance.

Just by chance, one day I had my iPad set up on the desk to watch a movie on, and the screen had gone dark, and I caught my reflection exhaling.

HOLY CLOUDS, BATMAN!

They don't seem that big in normal light, but oh, yeah, they're big!

Don't believe me? Try it! :)
